OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE:
To facilitate the educational process for Multilingual (ML) students qualifying for English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) services based on the ACCESS for ELLs by supporting and enhancing the educational services offered by the teaching staff to ensure that students receive appropriate language instruction leading to linguistic and academic achievement in all content areas as well as social and cultural well-being.
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Understanding of sensitivity to and acceptance of cultural and linguistic differences in students.
- Understands policies and procedures of the District and related information; provides and follows verbal or demonstrated instructions relative to the same.
- Has the ability to communicate both orally and in written format relative to job requirements.
- Keeps the interests of the students foremost in all aspects of employment.
- Communicates in a tactful and respectful manner with students colleagues administrators and parents as requested.
- Flexibility in working with various age levels and with changing schedules.
- Works with individual and/or small groups of ML students under the supervision of the teacher.
- Supports ML students with the English language skills in Listening Speaking Reading and Writing according to their levels of proficiency.
- Reviews and reinforces learning previously introduced by the classroom teacher or appropriate content specialist.
- Introduces new learning preplanned in collaboration and/or in consultation with the classroom teacher or appropriate content specialist.
- Performs non-instructional non-evaluative functions such as preparation of instructional material.
- Attends meetings as appropriate or requested.
- Assists teachers in student management.
- Attends training as required.
- Performs general supervisory duties before and after school during recess lunch assemblies and in classrooms within the standard school day as assigned.
- Supervises small groups of students in school and community-based activities (under the supervision of a teacher for Educational Technician I and II only).
- Performs all other related duties as deemed necessary by the Chief Academic Officer ESOL Coordinator for Teaching & Learning Building Administrator and/or designee.
- Maintains confidentiality related to all aspects of student performance and written or oral records.
- Demonstrates a respect for the human rights of students.
- Follows all laws and regulations at both the state and federal levels.
- Arrives and departs punctually notifying appropriate personnel about absences and coverage.
- Demonstrates dependability integrity and ethical standards as related to job.
QUALIFICATIONS and LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
- Meets the requirements of authorization as an Educational Technician II or III as defined by the Maine Department of Education (MDOE).
- Ability to perform work requested (both physically and mentally).
- Willingness to participate in on-going in-service activities in the specialty area of employment in order to maintain authorization through MDOE.
