Description

JOB SUMMARY: The Home Repair Technician supports older adults in Humboldt County by providing minor home repairs through HSRCs Home Repair Program. This hands-on role includes visiting clients homes to assess the repair needs estimating time and material costs needed and completing the minor repair tasks that improve safety and accessibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Conduct initial site visits to evaluate repair needs and estimate labor materials and time required (for budgeting purposes).
  2. Perform basic safety assessments as permitted by the participant.
  3. Complete minor home repairs (those not requiring a licensed contractor or building permits) such as:
    • Repairs to floorboards porches steps and railings
    • Installation of grab bars handrails and smoke detectors
    • Safety repairs such as tacking down loose carpet
    • Weatherization of windows and doors
    • Minor electrical or plumbing tasks (replacing gaskets)
    • Other minor tasks that would be difficult for older adults such as changing light bulbs in ceiling fixtures and changing batteries in smoke detectors
  4. Complete required paperwork for each job in a timely manner.
  5. Represent HSRC with professionalism and act in alignment with the organizations values.
  6. Additional duties may be assigned as needed that align with the responsibilities of the position and support the vision mission and values of the organization.

Qualifications

EDUCATION &/or EXPERIENCE:

  1. Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in basic home repair with demonstrated skill in carpentry minor plumbing and electrical repairs and grab bar installation on jobs not requiring a licensed contractor.
  2. Demonstrated interest in working with older adults; knowledge of and sensitivity to the unique needs and challenges of older adults.

LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES:

  1. Valid California Drivers License and personal auto liability insurance required. Must have a personal vehicle in good driving/operating condition and insured for state minimum liability requirements that can be used for the applicable job functions.
  2. Current CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire.

PRE-SCREENING REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Requires clearance of a DOJ and FBI criminal history background check
  2. Pre-employment physical examination clearance.
  3. Requires Motor Vehicle Report review for driving eligibility
  4. COVID-19 and Influenza (flu) vaccines preferred.

  2. Knowledge of Humboldt County area is desirable.

  11. Ability to relate to and communicate with older adults and frail persons as well as co-workers and to assist people who are in crisis or under extreme stress.
  12. Ability to work as part of a team taking initiative and responsibility while working with minimal supervision. Good judgment resourcefulness flexibility and problem-solving skills.
  13. Ability to maintain organization timeliness accuracy thoroughness and to monitor work for quality while performing various overlapping tasks.
  14. Ability to work in a constantly changing environment with individuals of various backgrounds and abilities.
  15. Possess strong recordkeeping skills and ability to maintain accurate files and records.
  16. Ability to maintain excellent attendance and punctuality records.
  17. Knowledge of computers and web-based applications such as timekeeping training and email programs.
  18. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position requires the ability to perform physical tasks associated with home repair work including standing bending kneeling climbing ladders lifting up to 50 pounds and using hand and power tools for extended periods. Work is primarily conducted in clients homes which may vary in cleanliness accessibility and safety conditions. The technician may encounter cramped spaces uneven surfaces dust pet dander or other environmental allergens. Travel throughout Humboldt County is required often to rural or remote locations and may involve navigating stairs or unpaved pathways. Personal protective equipment (PPE) may be necessary for certain tasks. The position involves frequent interaction with older adults and requires patience sensitivity and adaptability in potentially stressful or emotionally charged environments.
