Job Description

Experiential Learning/Shadowing 50%
  • Learn about and participate in art handling procedures and practices
  • Observe and participate in exhibition design basics and aesthetic considerations
  • Exposure to basic shop tools materials and techniques
  • Participate in cross-departmental special projects
Exhibition Tech/Preparator Assignments 50%
  • Build artwork mounts and assist in otherdesign/fabrication projects
  • Engage in mat cutting framing and label production
  • Learn and participate in vinyl design and cutting process
  • Maintain workspaces equipment and inventory of supplies
  • Assist with gallery maintenance such as dusting of artworks
  • Assistant with collection record keeping and other administrative and logistical tasks

  3. Developed acuity/insight as related to visual aesthetics as shown in application materials.
  4. Interest in art as shown in application materials.
  5. Museum experience as a volunteer or employee.
  6. Course study in art art history design or related field.
  7. Ability to think conceptuallyas shown in application materials.


Position Overview
The Spencer Museum of Art is a museum at the University of Kansas with two floors of galleries and a collection that represents different types of art from around the world.

Position Requirements
During the semester term of the appointment the student hourly must be enrolled in no fewer than 6 credit hours. For summer periods the student hourly must: (1) have been enrolled in no less than 6 hours in the past spring semester or (2) be pre-enrolled in the upcoming fall semester in no less than 6 hours or (3) be enrolled in summer session or (4) be admitted to study in the upcoming fall semester. Student Hourlies may be undergraduate or graduate students. (Exceptions granted for GRA/GTA/GA appointments DO NOT apply to Student Hourly appointments).

Employment Conditions
(1) Student employees are not eligible for remote work arrangements unless an exception is approved by the unit leadership and HR.

(2) This is an hourly/non-exempt position. A student employee cannot hold an hourly/non-exempt position and a salaried/exempt graduate or undergraduate position (GRA/GTA/GA/RUA/RGA) concurrently.
