Under the direction of the Surgery Clerkship Director or designee and the functional supervision of the Surgery Education Office Administrative Director the Clerkship Education Coordinator is responsible for a wide range of complex planning and administrative functions for the clerkship programs within the Department of Surgery at all sites (Parnassus Mission Bay Mt. Zion SFGH SFVAMC ACMC Highland Fresno Kaiser and CPMC);

In collaboration with the Surgery Clerkship Director Site Coordinators and Faculty establish and maintain a standard core curriculum that meets or exceeds the needs of the LCME and/or that of the University develop and maintain written goals and learning objectives for medical student rotations. Work closely with School of Medicine personnel/administration to review curriculum and implement necessary changes assure that regulatory and accreditation requirements are supported to minimize any potential accreditation risks to the Department of Surgery and/or School of Medicine.

Experience working in a dynamic administrative and educational environment. S/he should be adept at balancing quickly shifting priorities and working with faculty preceptors students and other off campus stakeholders.

Duties include coordinating educational activities maintaining online files tracking monitoring and reporting on student progress towards degree. This position works collaboratively with over 50 faculty and 100 residency/fellowship trainees to evaluate and support teaching and learning.

Applies knowledge about curriculum requirements and educational activities to coordinate professional health education programs. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $83700 - $125600 (Annual Rate).

  • 3 years related experience or in administrative medical education or educational field
  • Thorough knowledge of administrative analysis and operations research. Demonstrated ability to develop and implement processes and systems. Thorough knowledge of the administrative and operational implications in a program.
  • Demonstrated experience and documented excellence in oral and written communications skills; includes active listening and critical thinking.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Actively cooperates and supports the work of others. Ability to work productively with anyone regardless of background. Empathetic and aware of impact on others. Strong problem solving skills to assist learners and resolve issues.
  • Excellent organizational skills analytical and demonstrated attention to detail. Ability to complete work and meet established deadlines in an accurate and timely manner and to manage short and competing deadlines.
  • Thorough knowledge of educational software and platforms. Demonstrated ability to analyze and seek solutions to enhance the user experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of data management documentation methods used in investigating and presenting findings about the program. Skills include statistical analysis of data across databases and systems.


    • Masters degree in related area preferred
    • Thorough knowledge of relevant policies and regulatory requirements. Solid knowledge of health professions education program requirements. Thorough knowledge of health professions education industry.

    Department Description
    The Department of Surgery is a large clinical department comprised of eight divisions and over 500 employees (Campus and Medical Center staff faculty academic research staff residents clinical and post doctoral fellows). The Department through its faculty and staff conducts teaching performs research provides patient care services and performs service to the community. At the center of the educational mission are the trainee residency fellowship and medical student programs. The Department of Surgery has 3 residency and 11 fellowship programs. Many of our trainees go on to become national leaders in research clinical care or education.
