What does a Water/Sewer Health Safety & Skills Training Specialist do

The Full-Time Water/Sewer Health Safety & Skills Training Specialist plays a crucial role in fostering a safe and healthy working environment for approximately 185 employees in the Water/Sewer Department. This position is responsible for planning coordinating and implementing comprehensive safety plans inspection programs and emergency plans as well as conducting essential safety and skills training programs. By ensuring compliance with governmental regulations the specialist aims to minimize employee exposure to unsafe conditions and practices. Additionally this role includes preparing routine safety and training reports for department leadership and serving as the primary health and safety trainer using City-developed materials. The specialist will also be actively involved in onboarding new employees and may arrange third-party training programs when necessary ensuring that all staff are well-equipped to uphold the highest safety standards.

  • Thorough knowledge of Occupational health and safety regulations safety programs and loss prevention principles and practices; ability to develop and implement safety plan and training programs; ability to present facts and recommendations in oral and written form; ability to prioritize and balance multiple tasks; ability to take independent forceful action to remedy unsafe work conditions or practices; working knowledge of building and life safety codes is desirable; proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; tact and courtesy; good judgment; accuracy; thoroughness and dependability.

Acceptable experience and training:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors degree in Occupational Health and Safety. Three to five years of verifiable experience in the Occupational Health and Safety field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which would provide the required knowledge skills and abilities.
