EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience. The maximum substitution allowed is 60 semester hours which substitutes for two years of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Possession of a current Louisiana drivers license.
Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Specific duties include but are not limited to the following:
75% - Law Enforcement
Protects life and property with an emphasis on law enforcement crime prevention crime and accident investigation and arranging emergency services. Incumbents patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to detect and prevent crime.
Inspects and reports on the condition of 107 miles of earthen levees and floodwalls 1400 acres of levee turn maintenance area 200 land-based floodgates and 6 navigational floodgates 3 permanent canal closures and pumps and various valves along the levee system.
Responds to complaints/requests for law enforcement assistance. Investigates disturbances suspicious activities and crimes. Intervenes in situations using force if necessary to restore order to prevent interference with normal operations or to protect life and property. Empowered to make arrests if necessary. Interviews witnesses; identifies collects and preserves evidence. Transports offenders to Orleans Justice Center or turns them over to the appropriate authority. Completes all related reports regarding incidents.
Answers phone and logs calls. Logs out hand radio units. Dispatches officers to sites of reported crimes accidents or disputes. In the event of injuries arranges for appropriate medical emergency response.
Inspects assigned vehicle and equipment regularly to ensure that items are in proper working order. Reports any malfunctioning equipment or vehicle.
Renders emergency first aid if necessary and calls for ambulance fire department or any other needed support when necessary. Serves as Incident Commander of major incidents/events until the arrival of a higher authority
Works special assignments involving large crowd control operations surveillance activities and matters involving selective enforcement activities.
Participates in large-scale crowd control on the Lakefront during peak season. Assists the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) with crowd control during Mardi Gras. Also provides backup to NOPD in other law enforcement activities as requested.
Provides security to visiting dignitaries.
Provides complex law enforcement services involving criminal investigations collection of evidence arrests and testimony in court cases.
Provides traffic enforcement issuing citations for traffic or parking violations. Enforces motor vehicle laws and conducts motor vehicle accident investigations. Enforces DUI/DWI statutes. Administers breathalyzer and field sobriety tests.
Testifies in court regarding issued citations or handled situations.
Sets up barriers or barricades when roadways require closing due to inclement weather special events criminal investigations or other events. Directs traffic.
Issues citations summons for violations of statutes.
Patrols areas adjacent to the SLFPA-E/Orleans Levee District or other areas of Orleans Parish as requested by the NOPD.
Responds to calls in the area and assists NOPD already on the scene. In cooperation with NOPD provides surveillance and may make arrests related to illegal drug activity.
As requested provides assistance to other law enforcement entities including the Jefferson Parish Sheriff s Department the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries the FBI the Secret Service the DEA the US Coast Guard the US Customs Department and the Department of immigration and Naturalization. When requested assists other law enforcement departments in detaining aircraft arriving at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.
Completes all records and reports related to law enforcement activities including activity sheets radio logs time and attendance reports Daily FOLDER Checklist report accident reports etc. and provides to Police Sergeant for review.
25% - Training and Other
Attends classes and training sessions to maintain law enforcement skills learn new techniques remain up-to-date on laws affecting work and other matters deemed appropriate or beneficial.
Escorts SLFPA-E staff trucks and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement. Provides security for SLFPA-Es emergency repair/maintenance and repair crews during hurricane or other events that could lead to flooding. Ensures that only authorized individuals are allowed access to such areas.
Performs other duties as required and assigned

NOTE:Incumbents perform all duties as needed and assigned and may be assigned duties and shifts as manpower dictates. Officers may be assigned to a fixed detail patrol duties or office duties (relief dispatch or courier) as needs dictate. During emergency events (hurricanes high water events etc.) incumbents may be required to report for and remain on duty for the duration of the event or until released by the appropriate authority. Physical Demands: Incumbents must be able to safely and efficiently operate all police equipment and vehicles. In addition they must be able to lift throw and place 40-50-pound sandbags during emergency and disaster events. Other Requirements: Incumbents must be assessed by a clinical psychologist as being suited for law enforcement duties. Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and must be able to acquire and maintain a police commission from the Louisiana Department of Public Safety. Incumbents must be POST certified (completed all requirements under law as prescribed by the Police Officer Standards of Training) by the end of the probationary period.
Physical Demands: Incumbents must be able to safely and efficiently operate all police equipment and vehicles. In addition they must be able to lift throw and place 40-50-pound sandbags during emergency and disaster events.
Other Requirements:Incumbents must be assessed by a clinical psychologist as being suited for law enforcement duties.
