Job Summary:
This technician will act under the direction of the NAT Crew Supervisor directly or through an assigned Technician II and is responsible for assisting in all grounds building and maintenance activities. Tasks may include landscape maintenance native vegetation management hard surface maintenance playground repairs and upkeep snow removal irrigation repairs outdoor building maintenance daily small equipment maintenance and special event assignments.
Experience Knowledge Skills:
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One to three (1-3) years of experience with specific landscape native maintenance practices.
OR
- Any combination of related education experience certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
AND
- Possession of valid drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications
- One (1) year of grounds maintenance experience.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of native versus non-native and noxious plant species.
- Experience operating equipment such as a mower blower truck plow ATV small tractor etc.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
Essential Functions:
- Typical landscape duties to include repairing irrigation systems fertilizing applying herbicides and pesticides edge sidewalks string trim aeration mowing shelter maintenance brick paver repairs and site cleanup.
- Responsible for maintaining safety standards and visually inspecting equipment and site amenities daily.
- Provides a consistent maintenance program which helps to improve native vegetation health overall ecosystem function and image for the entire city.
- Required to frequently use gas-powered equipment during all seasons.
- Uses all required safety equipment and takes proper safety precautions anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents.
- Assists with data collection for performance measures.
- Assists with assigned snow removal routes and duties at times on weekends holidays or outside typical business hours.
- Provides support to other staff during peak times and with larger projects (snow removal irrigation inventory volunteer/service project and capital improvement projects).
- May be assigned to various internal or external boards and committees.
- Performs site cleanup.

- Exposure to various types of machinery noise - some levels are excessive.
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals.

- Must be able to work both indoors and outdoors in any weather condition.
- Typical hearing protection will be provided.
- May occasionally stand on concrete for long periods of time.
- Frequent and inflexible deadlines.
- May be asked to drive a personal vehicle for business purposes.
- Subject to driving City vehicles in all weather conditions.
- May be required to conduct business in alternate locations within City buildings or field sites sometimes in formal settings.
- Requires ability to perform multiple tasks at one time with frequent interruptions.
- May be required to work evenings weekends or holidays to cover events Saturday workdays or emergencies.
- Environment is dangerous to having considerable hazards reflect a frequent exposure to conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury; constant exposure to blood borne and airborne pathogens and human feces; exposure to cleaning chemicals ice melt paint fumes fertilizer pesticides and herbicides; exposure to extreme temperature conditions ranging from below zero to above 100 degrees Fahrenheit; working with power equipment heavy equipment sharp objects and mowers; exposure to illegal and criminal activity in parks (e.g. gangs bomb making materials drugs graffiti vandalism and contaminated furniture).
Physical Requirements
- Moderate to considerable physical effort that includes working from ladders in awkward positions. Frequent use of light or medium weight objects (e.g. 25-50 lbs) and use of medium weight tools.
- Vision enough to perform functions such as identifying materials necessary to complete maintenance on equipment and grounds and to operate vehicles and equipment.
- Manual dexterity is enough to operate hand tools mowers edgers blowers tractors trenchers front-end loaders skid steers and other related equipment and vehicles.
- Flexibility enough to bend twist and reach as to load and unload equipment supplies or tools.
- Ability to move over rough uneven and rocky surfaces in performance of grounds maintenance.
- Stamina and strength enough to lift and or move up to 50 pounds for long distances over a variety of surfaces.
- Ability to climb steps and ladders and work at various heights and in confined spaces.
- Perform strenuous labor in all types of weather.
