Primary Purpose of Position:

The Historic Interpreter I at Bentonville Battlefield is the primary visitor services point of contact for visitors. This includes greeting people monitoring the phones scheduling groups providing orientation and giving guided tours.

Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Guided tours of the Harper House and ranger talks are conducted daily by the Interpreter I. This position will also be asked to learn and give various battlefield tours for the public and military groups.
  • The position is responsible for answering site inquiries via phone email and mail to include scheduling and booking groups and site rentals.
  • The Interpreter I serves as the site education coordinator. In this capacity the Interpreter creates innovative programing for students to experience both on-site and at school.
  • The Interpreter serves as the volunteer coordinator. The position is responsible for recruiting training scheduling and supervising site volunteers.
  • Conducting outreach to support group schools civic organizations military groups and peer organizations.
  • The Interpreter conducts research using primary resource documents. This research is in turn used to write articles blog posts exhibit text waysides and tour outlines.
  • The position assists staff with financial and administrative paperwork and reports as needed.
  • The Interpreter serves as the site registrar. In this capacity the interpreter sees to the organization cleanliness and care of the sites artifacts this includes the historic Harper House the sites largest artifact.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Must be available to work the schedule of Tuesday-Saturday 8:30-5:00pm with some evening and Monday work occasionally required. The work schedule for this position is subject to change dependent on any future alterations to site operating hours. Thiscouldlead to a Wednesday-Sunday schedule on a temporary or permanent basis.

The March 1865 Battle of Bentonville was the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought in North Carolina. With nearly 2500 acres preserved Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site is the largest historic site in North Carolina. The sites mission is to interpret the Battle of Bentonville life in North Carolina during the Civil War and to preserve the battlefields historical resources.

Veterans and National Guard Preference
