Your success will be measured by your ability to proactively perform maintenance work ensuring minimal breakdown and emergency repair translating into cost savings for the organization.
What will you do
- Perform track maintenance and repair activities: Maintain rail track replace and repair of rail defects rail anchor replacement tie replacement track lining and lifting tamping rail grinding ballasting turnout maintenance grade crossing maintenance tunnel washing station track area cleaning and maintenance of wayside equipment
- Perform routine maintenance: switch and rail lubrication cleaning of switch points grade crossing cleaning right-of-way and station cleaning weed control grass cutting and snow removal
- Perform routine Inspection: check turnouts (switch points frogs diamonds heel castings bolts rods switch stands) rails rail fastening assemblies guardrails grade crossing train stops derails wayside equipment and drainage
- Identify and report deficiencies in track infrastructure including tie condition track gauge cross elevation rail wear and grade
- Materials Handling: loading unloading transport and material inventory
- Track construction and renewal
- Obtain measurements pertaining to track
- Operate heavy equipment
- Completion of Grade 10
- Experience in rail maintenance/rail construction or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Assets:
- Experience using construction/rail equipment
Skills required for success:
- Knowledge of standard methods materials tools and equipment used in the maintenance of LRT and right-of-way
- Ability to use the necessary hand and power tools for work assignments
- Knowledge of safety precautions and hazards involved with the work assigned
- Ability to understand written and verbal instructions

Conditions of Employment:
- Compliance with the City of Edmontons safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
- Must be able to successfully complete and maintain Class A Rule Book qualification on the Light Rail Transit Rules and Regulations
- Applicants may be required to take a pre-employment Functional Abilities Assessment Evaluation (F.A.R.E. test) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers licence with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent); Class 3 with Air Brakes endorsement must be obtained once in the position within 6 months of employment. Obtaining and maintaining a City Drivers permit is a requirement of this position
- Applicants may be tested
Work Environment:
- Physical ability and manual dexterity to perform heavy manual labour for extended periods of time under various weather conditions
- Ability to sign up on various work schedules sign up based on seniority including night shifts and being On-call and work in sometimes intense outdoor weather conditions
