****Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawaii may apply for Casual Hire positions which include administrative professional and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Salary Range: $20.00 /hour

Work Schedule: 19 hours/week

Type: Temporary Not to Exceed 12/10/2025

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development and testing of the Roman Space Telescope data pipeline.
  • Contribute to algorithms for identifying transient astronomical events (e.g. supernovae).
  • Run and evaluate simulations of transient detection under varying noise and cadence conditions.
  • Document code results and procedures clearly for integration with team workflows.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelors degree in Physics Astronomy or a related STEM field.
  2. Proficiency in Python programming and Linux-based workflows.
  3. Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with a research team.


Desirable Qualifications

  1. Familiarity with astronomical data formats (e.g. FITS) and transient surveys.
  2. Experience with Git Jupyter Notebooks or related development tools.
  3. Previous involvement in research or course work related to astrophysics or space instrumentation.
