Pay Grade/Pay Range:Minimum: $62300 - Midpoint: $81000 (Salaried E10)

Department/Organization:750501 - Alabama Water Institute (AWI)

Normal Work Schedule:Monday - Friday 8:00am to 4:45pm

Job Summary:The Programmer Analyst II designs develops supports and codes low- to moderate-complexity software systems to support the administrative function of the University under moderate supervision. This may include departmental and moderately critical applications. Develops processes and web applications. Creates workflows. Installs customizes supports and creates integrations for vendor-supplied software systems. Works on a team and collaborates with specific departments colleges and customers around campus. Supports their needs troubleshooting and resolving issues and responding to their questions and concerns in a timely manner.

Additional Department Summary:The Alabama Water Institute at the University of Alabama has an opening for a Programmer Analyst II with a strong hands-on technical orientation to contribute to a NOAA-funded project. This position will be oriented around integrating scientific methodologies into research hydrology simulations building geospatial data pipelines and producing shareable community codes. The role requires strong collaboration across CIROH research teams as well as coordination of specific research workflows to support individual contributions. The specialist will also be involved in stakeholder outreach documentation and addressing technical challenges related to interconnected systems for hydrological modeling.

Continuation in this position is contingent upon the availability of external funding derived from research programs or specific projects.

Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Masters degree in Computer Science Information Systems Software Engineering Mathematics Geography or a closely related field.

Skills and Knowledge:Familiarity with one or more programming languages (e.g. Java Python SQL or similar). Understanding of software development concepts and database systems. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Willingness to learn and grow in a collaborative environment. Familiarity with version control tools (e.g. Git) and basic software debugging tools.

Preferred Qualifications:Internship part-time job or coursework involving software development or IT systems. Familiarity with the NextGen framework or similar hydrological systems. Background in integrating machine learning models into system workflows. Knowledge of NOAAs operational forecasting systems or similar platforms. Experience with large-scale data processing and optimization techniques. Participation in publishing technical documentation or scientific papers.
