JOB DESCRIPTION: School Bus Driver
POSITION SUMMARY:
- The School Bus Driver is responsible for transporting students to school on regularly scheduled or special assignment runs for the District and for ensuring the safety of student passengers while in a school vehicle.
- Hiring for this position will be for the 25/26 School Year. Employees will be required to start before the school year to complete all required trainings.
Pay increase to $21.34 - $28.14/hr is effective July 1 2025. Any work completed prior to this date will be paid at a rate of $19.34 - 26.14
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The School Bus Driver :
- Drives a school transportation vehicle within a prescribed route or special assignment picking up and discharging students at designated stops. *
- Operates specialized handicap and other equipment; loads and unloads students in wheelchairs on and off bus; inspects wheelchairs for operational safety; operates ramps; positions and secures wheelchairs in bus. *
- Maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers according to District policy. *
- Conducts all required safety and operation inspections of assigned vehicle as often as required by policy and at least daily. *
- Reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary. *
- Performs periodic safety drill and required by law; completing necessary reports upon request. *
- Maintains cleanliness of vehicles to ensure safe and sanitary operating condition. *
- Completes periodic mileage and other reports including passenger counts as required by policy. *
- Attends all requires meetings/trainings regarding first aid and operation updates as required. *
- Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of applicable Motor Vehicle Code as it applies to the operation of vehicle in the transportation of school children.
- Operates two-way radio as necessary. *
- Washes and cleans buses and support vehicle as necessary or instructed. *
- Follows the policies and procedures of the school and the District. *
- Demonstrates a sense of professional responsibility such as demonstrating ethical behavior; providing accurate data and reports when needed; meeting deadlines; maintaining confidentiality; caring for the equipment and materials; and dressing appropriately and presenting a good role model. *

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Ability to read and write at a level necessary to successfully perform the required duties; ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instruction in an independent manner; ability to establish and maintain proper student conduct on school vehicles ability to drive a school bus safely and efficiently; ability to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while driving; ability to maintain valid certification as school bus driver according to state and federal regulations; ability to meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties; ability to establish and maintain effective work relationship with those contacted to the performance of required duties.
- Knowledge of the provision of applicable Motor Vehicle Code as applied to the operation of vehicles used in the transport of school children; knowledge of basic first aid practices procedures and techniques; and knowledge of safe driving practices.
Employment Standards:
- Minimum of high school education or GED
- Must pass physical examination as required by U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Motor Vehicle Carrier Safety Regulations 49 CFR 391.41 391.49. Physical may be required after severe illness injury or as supervisors discretion.
- Each person who drives a school bus must receive training to obtain a valid Class B or higher Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with passenger and school bus endorsements as specified by the DOT requirements (ACSD#1 will assist hired candidates in training to obtain CDL.
- Be able to lift legal OSHA requirements of 50 lbs.
- Demonstrate the ability and physical dexterity to perform a DOT pre-trip inspection I.e. bending climbing stooping reaching crawling etc.
- Physical ability test.
- Must have satisfactory driving record secured from the Wyoming Department of Transportation and maintain insurability.
- Must pass drug and alcohol test at the time of hire and random testing thereafter as required by DOT.
- Application must meet minimum standards for the school bus driver as outline by the state of Wyoming Department of Education.
- Must complete six (6) hours of training per year.

- Mental Requirements: read write understand interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level essential for successful job performance; math skills at a high school proficiency level; judgement and the ability to process information quickly; learn quickly and follow verbal procedures and standards; give verbal instruction; rank tasks in order of importance; copy compare compile and coordinate information and records.
- Additional Work Conditions and Physical Abilities: Requires travel to multiple sites.

- Evaluation of this position shall be by the Transportation Manager.
