Job Description

Title:Campus Safety Officer- Part Time

Position Purpose:

The part time Bates Campus Safety Officer is expected to be a common presence on campus; serve on the communications line respond to calls for service (both emergency and routine); enforce college policy through a student support accountability and community lens; prepare and submit incident reports; and perform other duties as required by the Director of Campus Safety.

Joining a collaborative and cross-departmental team engaged in a co-produced campus safety model the Campus Safety Officer will be on shift with other Campus Safety Officers & Coordinators of Residence Life on-call. In addition the Office of Campus Life that sponsors events will have event staff and contracted security during large student events on campus.

With an increasingly racially and culturally diverse student body the Campus Safety Officer will view their work through a lens of support equity and inclusion. Campus Safety Officers will engage and support students guests and stakeholders from historically underrepresented groups including students of color LGBTQ students international students students with disabilities first-generation college students and the student organizations dedicated to supporting these students on campus. Additionally Campus Safety Officers will develop strong partnerships with various campus offices and key stakeholders to ensure continued positive long lasting relationships within the Bates Community.

This position is consideredEssential Personnelin the event that:

  • an emergency occurs on the Bates Campus or in the vicinity that would impact Bates
  • inclement weather forces the closing of campus or
  • or other emergency events deemed appropriate.

Essential Personnel are required to report to or remain at work if instructed to do so if contacted directly by the supervisor (or his/her designee) the President or a member of the Presidents Staff (Sr. Leadership Team.)

Schedule may be adjusted based on College and other departmental needs or requirements. Typical schedule will be Saturdays and Sundays 8am - 5pm.

  • Opportunities available to fill shift vacancies as they occur 7 days a week
  • This position is expected to attend department meetings once monthly when/if possible

Job Duties:

Community Engagement Relationship Building & Conflict Management Responsibilities

  • Maintain a high level of visibility on campus to build relationships with students by conducting rounds when on duty and attending programs and other engagement opportunities
  • Provide high-level professional and courteous service through interactions with the Bates community via personal contact telephone service and timely competent & empathetic radio dispatch services
  • Incorporate the tenants of equity inclusion access and educational justice in all areas of work
  • Considering community health equity fairness and de-escalation techniques - identify intervene and document campus conflicts/issues while completing rounds or when being dispatched by a Campus Safety team member
  • Respond to incident and behavioral calls including those that are highly complex in nature; e.g. sexual misconduct alcohol and drug related behavior mental health concerns bias incidents health & safety concerns and community conflict
  • Complete appropriate accurate and consistent documentation of policy violations and conflicts in accordance with departmental risk management practices

Communications Responsibilities

  • Approaches all communications and calls received with empathy equity and customer service while also obtaining the information needed professionally and efficiently
  • Answers incoming calls on a multi-line switchboard the Campus Safety business phone line in person as well as the emergency elevator phone and takes the appropriate information and/or makes proper connections
  • Maintains daily log of daily activities and initiates incident reports
  • Dispatches all calls for service with emergency calls taking precedence using Campus Safetys two-way radio system
  • Monitors the E-access System for alarms
  • Performs data entry of information relevant to the functioning of Campus Safety
  • Registers computers bicycles etc. for crime prevention
  • Responds to inquiries and furnishes information on campus activities organizations key personnel administrative/academic offices and locations or transfers callers to offices which can provide information
  • Completes and sends maintenance work order request forms
  • Maintains various records books such as criminal trespass no contact parking permits etc.

Campus Safety Response & Asset Management

  • Responds to allroutine and emergency calls for service (medical fire alarms and burglar alarms)
  • Provides campus safety escort and locks and unlocks buildings and offices as necessary
  • Investigates incidents occurring on campus or in college owned property and completes detailed and accurate reports both verbally and in writing
  • Conducts crime prevention personal safety programs and safety survey programs
  • Works closely with Bates EMS and supports Bates EMS on medical calls

Administration

  • Maintains a thorough daily log of activities and assorted reports for each assigned shift
  • Attends all departmental trainings and meetings
  • Supports parking and traffic control policy and enforcement that includes ticketing and towing of vehicles as required
  • Works with the Access Control Office of Campus Safety to issue the Bates Card to faculty staff and students as needed. Maintain working knowledge of E-access system.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance including working mandatory overtime as assigned
  • Handles sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact
  • Maintains a pleasant and professional rapport with the City of Lewiston and other outside agencies
  • Maintains all issued equipment in a clean and operable manner
  • Maintains a working knowledge of all relevant policies pertaining to safety and security

Minimum Qualifications:

Education

  • HS Diploma/GED Required with 2-3 years experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience OR current participation in a criminal justice (or related degree) associates/bachelors program working toward a degree.
  • Associates or Bachelors degree in criminal justice education community health psychology student affairs education social work counseling or related fields (or equivalent and relevant work experience) preferred.
  • Current valid drivers license and clean driving record required.

Experience

  • 2 3 years of work experience that demonstrates commitment dependability and maturity
  • Equivalent work experience serving in residence life or that demonstrate a commitment a willingness to be part of a team and willingness to support students also considered (such as serving as an Resident Advisor (RA) Tutor etc.)

Skills and Knowledge

  • Proficiency in basic data management systems and basic computer software (e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel Power Point Google docs email and calendaring.)
  • Willingness and ability to learn additional software as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel (by car air train or bus) domestically and internationally as needed.
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends evenings & other non-traditional schedules.
