Manual Software Test Engineer

Play a vital role in verifying high-integrity software used on complex defence systems. At ALTEN were supporting critical programmes in the underwater systems domainwhere reliability usability and safety are key. As a Manual Software Test Engineer youll work as part of a dedicated team testing user-facing software in a Linux environment. Youll contribute directly to the assurance of safety-critical systems that protect national assets. This is your opportunity to apply your test expertise to a project with real-world impact.

Key Details:

Location: On-site in Manchester (5 days per week)
Security Clearance: Must be SC clearable
Experience Level: 5 years experience in Software Testing

Key Responsibilities:

• Design develop and execute manual software tests for complex systems with rich UI/UX interfaces
• Work closely with developers and systems teams to verify software functionality performance and usability
• Perform detailed functional regression and system-level testing on Linux-based systems
• Use Jira Confluence and other Atlassian tools to track issues and document testing activities
• Create and maintain formal test plans cases and results aligned to defence and safety-critical standards
• Contribute to testing in virtualised or containerised environments where required

Qualifications :

Required Skills:

• 5 years experience in manual software testing
• Strong experience with UI/UX testing on complex systems
• Solid understanding of formal testing processes and structured documentation
• Proficient in Linux OS with experience using Bash scripts
• Competence with Jira Confluence and associated tools for test tracking and reporting

Required Qualifications:

• Must be eligible for UK Security Clearance (SC)
• A Bachelors degree in Computer Science Software Engineering or a related discipline OR
• A relevant background in UK Armed Forces with proven software testing experience

Desirable Skills:

• Experience working within defence or safety-critical environments
• Understanding of Agile development practices and workflows
• Exposure to C or Java
• Familiarity with test automation CI/CD tooling (e.g. Jenkins JFROG Artifactory)
• Understanding of containerisation technologies (e.g. Docker) and IP networking protocols
