Job Description

Job Responsibilities


The instructor will advance the mission of the South Carolina Governors school for the Arts and Humanities to identify and teach South Carolinas artistically talented high school students through programs of pre-professional instruction in an environment of artistic and academic excellence. The successful candidate will also advance the schools Outreach mission by serving as a resource for all teachers and students in South Carolina.

In consultation with the Department Chair and Dean teaches and contributes to ongoing design and implementation of ballet curriculum that aligns with standards for ballet training in accordance with state and national standards utilizing the South Carolina College- and Career Ready Standards for Visual and Performing Arts Proficiency and the schools curriculum as adopted by the Board of Directors.

The Dance Department seeks a professionally trained ballet teacher with experience teaching advanced ballet technique. The department serves 10th-12th grade students who choose to pursue pre-professional training in either Classical Ballet or Modern & Contemporary Dance. This vibrant progressive dance program aims to be both formal and forward thinking blending classical traditions with the moving trends of the 21st century. The program offers students a systematic yet diverse curriculum that is designed to educate and prepare students for entry into the highly fluid and competitive professional dance world.

Therefore the department seeks a dynamic instructor who will teach advanced ballet technique pointe and variations; stage classical ballet repertoire and create new works as needed for the dance departments demonstrations and performances; prepare students for perfom1ances. auditions and international ballet competitions; assist in costume coordination; and advise and mentor students in informal settings and through formal course structures such as Senior Audition Preparation and Senior Showcase.

In addition to teaching all faculty at SCGSAH organize departmental programming participate in school wide events engage with Admissions and Outreach colleagues and have an opportunity to work in our summer programs.

Faculty are expected to demonstrate excellence in continued artistic and academic pursuits. They should represent SCGSAH and the department through active involvement in professional activities and organizations and strengthen professional ties by participating exhibiting performing and/or making presentations for public groups districts and schools parent groups etc. Other related duties may be assigned by the Department Chair or Administration.

Full-time faculty alsoparticipate in faculty and departmental meetings committees programs and other events that promote excellence and growth in the department and school. They should participate in auditions and admissions review processes as requested by the Department Chair or Dean and demonstrate interest and engagement in student performances and other school-wide activities.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

A bachelors degree (BA or BFA) along with a minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level. Performance background with a major ballet company. Advanced knowledge of Vaganova technique or other training systems at an advanced level. Advanced level of Pointe technique and teaching experience. Knowledge of classical repertoire and experience both staging this repertoire and choreographing in the ballet aesthetic. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively with students faculty and staff.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or masters degree in dance performance or related dance studies along with five (5) years of successful teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level.

Outstanding performance background with a major ballet company. Advanced knowledge and experience teaching Vaganova method or another training system. Extensive knowledge of classical repertoire and experience both staging this repertoire and choreographing in the ballet aesthetic.

Demonstrated knowledge and interpersonal skills to work with public school students who have exceptional artistic potential and achievement other arts and academic educators and diverse constituencies and cultures. Experience teaching and administering summer dance programs for middle/high school students. Experience with outreach and curriculum design for K-12 film teachers and students.

The preferred candidate will have demonstrated expertise and ability to teach one or more of the following: dance history. ballet pedagogy historical dance character cross-training and production. The preferred candidate will also have a demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion as an educator and artist.
