Job Description

DEFINITION OF POSITION:The English Language Development (ELD) Teacher is responsible for providing intensive English language instruction for non-English speaking students.

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Building Principals

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Possess or be eligible for a Washington State Teaching Certificate with a K-12 English Language Learner endorsement or Bilingual Education endorsement
  • Successful teaching substituting or student teaching experience in ELD

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Successful experience teaching in an ELD or Bilingual program
  • Experience with GLAD and/or SIOP
  • Ability to speak a foreign language and/or experience in another culture
  • Experience and/or knowledge about linguistic minority groups
  • Knowledge of/experience with Washington State and Common Core Standards
  • Masters degree in English Language Learning or Bilingual Education

ESSENTIAL JOB-RELATED ACTIVITIES:

  • Knowledge of second language acquisition
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations grants and programs governing ELD/bilingual programs and the Washington State ELD Standards
  • Coordinate and administer the Washington English language proficiency assessment (ELP21)
  • Identify and assess student language level
  • Administer standardized tests identifying students with English language deficiencies (ELP21 screener)
  • Be knowledgeable of contemporary pedagogical practices such as developmentally appropriate practices cooperative learning learning styles integrated curriculum inclusion practices enrichment opportunities alternative assessment individualized programs multi-intelligences global/multi-cultural education diversity etc.
  • Establish learning objectives and outcomes consistent with individual students learning needs the Districts learning objectives and goals and grade level and ELD standards
  • Plan and develop a variety of instructional experiences appropriate to the specified learning objectives and outcomes
  • Conduct the instructional plan
  • Select and/or create appropriate instructional materials
  • Organize the physical setting so it contributes to learning
  • Organize individual small group or large group learning experiences as appropriate to the students subject matter and outcomes desired
  • Assess students achievement
  • Assist in completing all required state and federal grants and reports
  • Assist with data collection analysis and dissemination
  • Develop and maintain clear standards for student conduct with appropriate disciplinary action
  • Maintain effective communication with parents and staff relative to student progress
  • Assume responsibility for school activities
  • Remain pedagogically current through continuing professional development
  • Plan and facilitate teacher professional development sessions
  • Plan and facilitate parent training sessions
  • Coach teachers model lessons co-teach and support teachers in implementing new strategies following professional development
  • Monitor the implementation of programs and instructional strategies
  • Provide technical assistance to classroom teachers
  • Supervise and plan with ELD paraprofessional and/or WSU practicum students if applicable
  • Possess and practice strong interpersonal skills with a wide variety of people both inside and outside the organization (staff parents community members other agencies)
  • Be a positive team builder who works in a collaborative manner
  • Meet multiple demands in pressure situations and maintain high levels of quality work
  • Maintain confidentiality
  • Communicate clearly both orally and in writing
  • Regularly demonstrate professionalism in appearance actions decisions and overall performance
  • Work with minimal supervision and be flexible

TERMS OF CONTRACT:

  • Salary: $55318 - $104265 per year placement based on experience and level of education
  • Length of Contract: 1.0 FTE 180 days plus professional development days
  • Leaves/Benefits: Medical dental vision life and long-term disability coverage is provided through SEBB (School Employee Benefits Board) for employees who work at least 630 hours per academic year. Retirement benefits are provided through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Additional benefits may include sick/emergency leave and personal leave as per the collective bargaining agreement between the PullmanEducation Association (PEA) and the Pullman School District (PEA Bargaining Agreement).
