The Opportunity
The Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering (GSBmE) at UNSW is looking for a motivated Technical Officer/Senior Technical Officer to support its new undergraduate degree. In this role you will bring your experience to play a central role in the design delivery and management of our teaching laboratories. Youll work closely with academic staff to bring learning to life support innovative lab-based education and help empower students with the tools they need to thrive in their careers. An understanding of laboratory resources logistics and the scale needed to deliver student focused practical classes is highly desirable for this opportunity.
As a Technical Officer / Senior Technical Officer you will play a key role in the efficient day-to-day management of the Schools teaching and research equipment infrastructure and services. Youll identify and provide expert technical support for research and teaching needs oversee the commissioning and maintenance of specialised equipment and manage user access and training.
Additionally you will drive WHS compliance implement safety initiatives and work alongside the HSE Advisor and Laboratory Manager to develop policies that maintain a secure and efficient lab environment. Beyond technical oversight you will play a role in staffing and budget resource planning contributing to the optimisation of teaching operations.
This role reports to the GSBmE Laboratory Manager and has 1-4 direct reports.
- Salary - Broadbanded Level 6/7: $100354 to $119132 per annum 17% superannuation

Level 6
- A relevant qualification in mechatronics engineering and/or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education training and/or experience. Qualifications in biomedical engineering highly desirable Experience in CAD drawings using software such as Solidworks or equivalent is highly desirable.
- Proficient computing skills including word processing spreadsheets and databases.
- Knowledge of hazards associated with mechatronic teaching with demonstrated capacity to write safe working procedures and manage risks compliant within UNSW guidelines that are engaging and drive compliance and competence.
- Advanced time management organisational and problem-solving skills including the ability to prioritise and plan.
- Advanced skills in a variety of software applications with experience in teaching platforms e.g. Moodle.
- Ability to find technical solutions to teaching needs.
- Excellent communication skills to engage both students and academics in learning outcomes
- Demonstrated ability to train students and/or staff in relation to relevant equipment and safety procedures
- An understanding of and commitment to UNSWs aims objectives and values in action together with relevant policies and guidelines.
- Knowledge of health & safety (psychosocial and physical) responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
Level 7 (in addition to the above)
- Extensive experience in developing maintaining and trouble-shooting project-based learning projects at scale.
- Extensive knowledge of hazardous equipment materials and dangerous goods (HMDG) and their safe management.
- Demonstrated experience in managing budgets purchasing and assets or design/implementation of systems for teaching laboratories or research groups or equivalent.
- Proven experience developing and implementing safety systems in a laboratory context.
- High level analytical and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to investigate and make informed decisions regarding complex issues.
- Extensive experience in staff time and budget management.
- Experience in management of compliance for a wide range of oversight bodies such as WHS Engineers Australia.
- Extensive experience in delivering practical learning support in biomedical engineering disciple
- Demonstrated ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders to drive a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
