  • SCHOOL BUS DRIVER
    Location: Tucson Campus Employee Status: Permanent Hours Per Week: 30 Work Calendar: 10-Month Pay Rate: $17.75 With 6 months of experience with CDL P&S Endorsements
    $16.75 With CDL without 6 months of experience Other: School bus drivers are tasked with the vital responsibility of protecting our students on their way to and from school.
    They are the most highly trained tested and scrutinized drivers on the road requiring a CDL and Passenger and Student endorsements.
    They are required to know their students and be aware of their different disabilities in order to make their transportation times as comfortable and safe as possible.
    School bus drivers carry the most precious cargo: our children. Drivers and assistants make sure that students get to school and back home safely every day.
    They are the first school workers to greet students in the morning and the last to wave goodbye to them in the afternoon.
    School Bus Drivers must obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers License (C.D.L.) with Passenger (P) School Bus (S) and Air Brake (A) endorsements. CLASSIFICATION SPECIFICATION CLASS SUMMARY:

    The Non-CDL Route Driver is responsible for safely operating the state vehicle according to a set daily schedule. He/she must ensure that the vehicle is in good operating condition at all times pick up and drop off students as per the schedule maintain order and security in the vehicle and obey all laws regulations and rules of conduct. The Non-CDL Driver must also deal with residents and members of the public in a courteous and respectful manner. This includes receiving complaints about schedules and levels and quality of service.

    The Non-CDL Driver must make note of and report on any such complaints and respond in a courteous and respectful manner. It is critical for the Non-CDL Driver to operate the state vehicle in a safe manner. Failure to ensure the safe passage of students to and from school may result in serious liabilities for the School. Operating in an unsafe manner may result in injury or even the loss of life which would have tragic consequences for the community as a whole.

    Position is responsible for operating a state vehicle and transporting school-aged children and other authorized personnel safely and efficiently over specified routes to and from schools and various activities. Position conducts pre-trip/post-trip inspections observes safety regulations and policies enforces student discipline in the vehicle and performs related work.

    TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
    • Must have a minimum of 2 years driving experience.
    • Be prepared to participate in the ASL classes provided by the Agency
    • Be prepared to learn a vocabulary of frequently used word to communicate in ASL with students and staff.
    LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
    • Must be able to pass FBI and State background check or Fingerprint Clearance Card as position requires by policy or statute
    • Defensive Driver Training Program to be completed by all agency personnel that drive on State Business
    • - Must possess and then maintain a Class B CDL with a P and S endorsement.
      - Must pass physical and drug screens.
      - Positions working directly with students must obtain CIT (Crisis Intervention Training)
      CPR and First Aid Certification.
      * Valid Arizona State Drivers License in good standing as provided by a 39 month report run by the MVD.
      * Must be able to pass a post offer physical performance test.
      * Must be willing to participate in annual and random drug and alcohol testing.
    KNOWLEDGE OF:
    • Policies procedures and programs of the immediate work unit
    • Principles and practices of administration and management
    • Agency or program rules regulations and operating procedures
    • Arizona rules/regulations related to pupil transportation.
    • - Arizona Minimum Standards for School Buses and School Bus Drivers
      - FMSCA rules and regulations of operating a school bus
      - School Bus evacuation drills
      - Proper wheelchair tie down and lift protocol
    DEMONSTRATED SKILL/ABILITY TO:
    • Reading of gauges and indicators of a vehicle and to prepare a report.
    • Operate assigned vehicle in a safe manner and by the statutes of Arizona
    • Maintain courteous and professional manner
    • Follow scheduled route within allotted timeline.
    • Communicate information and ideas effectively so others will understand.
    • - Driving a large vehicle
      - Defensive Driving
      - CPR / First Aid/CIT
      - Good decision making skills
      - ASL (preferred but not required upon hiring)
    • SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION:
    • This position requires pre-employment drug testing and is subject to random drug testing for the duration of employment.
