Description

A Northwest leader in protecting animals since 1967 the Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) shelters homeless animals rehabilitates injured and orphaned wildlife and empowers people to demonstrate compassion and respect for animals in their daily lives.

Position Title: Seasonal Life Support Systems Assistant (approximately 6 months)

Hours: 2 Part-time positions (1 @ 24 hours per week AND 1 @ 32 hours per week)

Starting Wage: $16.66/hour

Purpose Summary:

To assist in the daily operations maintenance and monitoring of life support systems for PAWS animal care pools.

Essential Responsibilities:

In accordance with organizational policies duties include but are not limited to:

  • Monitoring and Maintaining Water Quality: Regularly test water chemistry parameters monitor change filters and clean filtration systems twice daily and as needed and adjust water parameters as needed.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on pumps filters plumbing and other life support equipment twice daily per shift and as directed by the Facilities Manager.
  • Troubleshooting and Repair: Identify malfunctions in life support systems collaborating with Facility manager when necessary.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Maintain records of water quality tests maintenance activities and system performance generating reports as required and help set up organized reporting systems.
  • Habitat Maintenance: Assist in cleaning vacuuming and maintaining aquatic habitats removing debris and ensuring optimal conditions for animals.
  • Ensures that aquatic pool systems are cleaned and maintained 2x daily and other animal care needs are met
  • Ensures that animals are being handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety. Ensures that protocols to minimize the risk of contraction of zoonotic diseases are being adhered to.

Other responsibilities Include:

  • Collaboration with Animal Care Teams: Work closely with rehabilitators and other animal care personnel to ensure the health and well-being of aquatic animals.
  • Safety and Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations including those related to ozone generation and other hazardous materials.
  • Training and Mentoring: Assist in training and mentoring seasonals and interns on life support systems operations and maintenance as needed to ensure back up staff are trained.
  • Administrative Tasks: May assist with creating record keeping systems for water quality testing maintenance of aquatic systems and generating reports.
  • Oversees and assists staff and volunteers with daily duties on pool systems. As time allows.
  • Assists with training and mentoring of staff and volunteers as time allows.
  • Assists in fulfilling daily care plans of wildlife patients including but not limited to nutritional husbandry and medical needs.
  • Assists with supporting staff and animal care seasonals with patients. Maintains animal care records inputs data.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Controls over Work

Assistant Wildlife Rehabilitators work under the direction of the and are expected to work without constant direct supervision.

Physical Requirements:

Candidates must be able to lift a minimum of forty 40) pounds and heavier weights with the assistance of another staff. Work is performed both in and out of the Wildlife Center that requires lifting bending stooping pushing and other moderately strenuous activities and must be able to stand for long periods of time.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent preferred
  • A minimum of three months experience in an aquatic care facility preferred.
  • Basic understanding of aquatic life support systems:

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Mechanical aptitude:Ability to perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment is helpful.
  • Knowledge of filtration water chemistry and other related concepts preferred but not required.
  • Attention to detail:Accuracy in data collection and record-keeping is crucial and ability to use computer systems.
  • Problem-solving skills:Ability to identify and address issues with life support systems.
  • Communication skills:Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and animal care staff.
  • Safety awareness:Understanding of safety protocols and procedures related to working with equipment and potentially hazardous materials.
  • Organize efficient and able to work independently where there may be no existing protocols.
  • Ability to work quickly efficiently and calmly under stressful conditions; handle multiple responsibilities; and work cooperatively with co-workers (volunteers interns and staff) and the public.
  • Possess excellent interpersonal organizational written and verbal communication skills and work effectively and respectfully with diverse groups of people and maintain high quality customer relations.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a valid Washington State drivers license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses and auto insurance with required coverage limits.
