Deputy Attorneys General with critical support from criminal special investigators victim service specialists paraprofessionals and administrative staff prosecute criminal cases enforce consumer laws provide counsel to state agencies ensure the publics access to open government protect the abused and much more.
Summary Statement
The Criminal Division seeks a Deputy Attorney General to serve as Unit Head for the Misdemeanor Trial Unit in Sussex County. The Deputy Attorneys General (DAG) in this Unit represent the State of Delaware in handling a large caseload of misdemeanor calendars. This Unit is a fast-paced and high-volume Unit which requires the DAGs to have a thorough knowledge of court rules and procedures. The DAGs are required to decide what cases should be prosecuted which should plead out what specific plea offers should be on a case-by-case basis which cases should be resolved by a trial and try the ones that are not otherwise resolved.
Essential Functions
The Unit Head is responsible for the supervision of Deputy Attorneys General and administrative and support operations within the Unit; coordination of assignments and training for all unit members and coverage of other managerial tasks as needed. This includes the management of personnel issues and allocating work assignments. The Unit Head will provide guidance to DAGs within the Unit to determine which cases should be prosecuted which should plead out which types of plea offers should be extended and which cases should be resolved by a trial. This Unit Head must be available for mentoring and training other Deputy Attorneys General and administrative staff while overseeing cases and operations within the Unit and conducting other managerial tasks as needed. The Unit Head will assist the DOJ and the Units DAGs with Community Engagement programs. The Unit Head will carry their own caseload.
Job Requirements
A candidate for this leadership position should have the skills necessary to effectively manage staff engage Deputy Attorneys General in trainings and have a high proficiency in criminal prosecution. Strengths should include the ability to evaluate and try criminal cases determine resolutions and anticipate legal issues. The candidate must have demonstrated ability to try cases in Superior Court and have a thorough knowledge of relevant laws and court rules. The candidate must have a command of DUI law and litigation strategies. The candidate must have the ability to train attorneys of varying skill levels and abilities and a desire to engage in community-based programs. In addition the candidate must have or be able to develop a good working relationship with other Deputy Attorneys General support staff other attorneys and Court personnel. Delaware Bar membership is required.
