The Medford Police Department is seeking a highly motivated candidate for the new part-time position of Court Bailiff. The ideal applicant will possess excellent communication skills and have a strong commitment to teamwork and effective problem solving. The position demands integrity trust and dedication to serving our community.As a Court Bailiff you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety security and order of court proceedings. Responsibilities include maintaining courtroom decorum enforcing court rules and assisting judges attorneys and other court personnel during sessions.

This part-time position will likely work Tuesday-Thursday 8:00am - 2:30pm; this schedule is subject to adjustments based on the needs of the Municipal Court.


Required Qualifications:
  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Possession of a valid drivers license by date of hire.
  • Ability to maintain acceptable driving record throughout employment.
  • Completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.
  • Ability to obtain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance upon hire.
  • Ability to handle confrontations with tact initiative and prudence.
  • Ability to handle moderate physical demands.

Special Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to those with:
    • College courses taken in criminal justice.
    • Experience in criminal justice law enforcement or security operation.

Assistance During Court Proceedings:

Public Interaction:
  • Assist and direct attorneys witnesses jurors and the public in navigating the court processes.
  • Provide information about courtroom procedures and ensure compliance with protocols.
Jury Management:
  • Escort and monitor jurors during trials and deliberations.
Administrative Duties:
  • Maintain records of courtroom proceedings as required.
  • Assist with courtroom setup ensuring all necessary materials are in place.
  • LEDS entries after court sessions.

Other Functions of the Position:
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall function of the department and organizational goals.
  • Demonstrates regular reliable and punctual attendance.
  • Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation.
  • Handles job stress and interacts effectively with others in the workplace.
  • Fosters an environment that embraces diversity integrity trust and respect.
  • Is an integral team player which involves flexibility cooperation and communication.
Work Environment:

The Court Bailiff position is primarily a typical court room environment including comfortable temperature lighting and standard office distractions. However the role involves frequent interactions with the public some of whom may be hostile or distressed contributing to a potentially tense atmosphere. These interactions coupled with the nature of court proceedings create a high-stress environment that may lead to the use of less-than-lethal weapons. The position also presents potential physical demands including the possibility of physically restraining individuals. Furthermore the emotional environment involves exposure to tense situations difficult circumstances and the responsibility for maintaining safety and order.


Physical Demands:
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. This position requires extended periods of standing and walking with occasional sitting. Must be able to crouch bend stoop twist turn and balance. The employee regularly operates various office equipment including computers printers copy machines calculators and telephones. Good eyesight hearing and dexterity are required.
