The Opportunity:

The Counsellor SAFE provides professional client care to the seriously behaviorally or emotionally disturbed children and youth population and who are at risk due to a combination of psychiatric symptoms complex medical/social factors or significant caregivers stress. The Counsellor collaborates with interdisciplinary team members and the City of Surrey Fraser Health Authority CGBV team educational resources and other health care professionals/provides to achieve excellence in health services and education. The Counsellor also provides community outreach services and bring awareness about mental health services in the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provides direct client care to the children and youth population and their families in Dari/ Farsi and communicable Pashto to the community by screening prioritizing and processing referrals conducting comprehensive assessments implementing therapeutic interventions during on-going follow-up care and consulting with the individuals general practitioners. Provides treatment modalities including individual treatment with adolescents and children play therapy family therapy and group therapy. Responds to crisis situations as required.
  • Provides quarterly mental health education and counseling/brokerage services to clients/families/caregivers at home and in facilities by presenting health care information relevant to the health concerns and performance of self-care activities coping skills and medications guidelines and teaches lifestyle adaptation and self-care skills.
  • Works collaboratively with SAFE Services staff care professionals and clients/family in the identification and resolution of client/family mental health issues ethical dilemmas concerns regarding services and coordination and integration of care.
  • Maintains records in accordance with established procedures and policies and prepares/maintains statistical data correspondence reports and other documentation as requires.
  • Participates in service inter-disciplinary case conferences and team meetings and weekly CHART meetings as required by the employer and collegially shares information demonstrates and/or provides guidance on clinical/health related tasks ensures students are aware of assignments developed by the employer and reassigns clinical/health related tasks as necessary.
  • Maintains high standards of practice and develops professional competence through in-service and other educational means as required by the employer.
  • Provides outreach rapid crisis response and bridging to appropriate community services; performs intake duties and group work as required.
  • Provides an ongoing commitment to client services and continuous quality improvement to ensure best practice client services and the most effective delivery of service.
  • To collaborate with the SAFE and CGBV team and other funding bodies to provide educational workshops to the Ministry staff regarding cross-cultural issues as related to the clients specific culture.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Ensures client files align with Accreditation PQI standards.
  • Meets objectives as outlined in the contract (s).
  • Administers Standardized Service Evaluation Questionnaires to the clients and the service providers of this program on a quarterly and yearly basis

Qualified candidateswill also possess:

  • Masters degree in Clinical Psychology or Social Work an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in Family counselling experience working with children adolescents and families and experience in psychoeducation work.
  • Strong written verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Accurate verbal and written knowledge in a second language required Dari/Farsi and communicable Pashto.
  • Understanding the immigrant and refugee experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the specific cultural population required.
  • Valid B.C. Drivers license required. Local area travel requires the use of a personal vehicle.
  • Criminal record check required.
