Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The drumline Instructor plays a critical role in developing the skills of young percussionists. As a new school the addition of a drumline instructor is vital to the growth of our band program under the direction of the Band Director the drumline instructor will teach the fundamentals of playing drums cymbals and other percussive instruments.

  • Status: Part Time- Stipend (To be Paid at the end of the fall season)
  • Reports to Band Director (approved by Assistant Principal of Academics)

ABOUT ST. JOHN PAUL II CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

St. John Paul II Catholic High School is a new college-preparatory co-ed high school rooted in Jesus Christ. Under the patronage of Pope St. John Paul II and dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe this liberal-arts high school offers a four-year philosophy program. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Administers the drumline program that he or she has been appointed to and is directly answerable to the Assistant Principal and Band Director
  • Promotes and strives to enhance the positive aspects of the reputation of St. John Paul II Catholic High School and the band program.
  • Submits an inventory of uniforms and equipment at the beginning and end of each season.
  • Maintains the schools disciplinary and dress code standards.
  • Demonstrates loyalty and adherence to the schools mission and the mission of the band program.
  • Engage students to practice play and perform introduced materials.
  • Attend all rehearsals sectionals and performances actively participating in assisting students in sectionals and whole group rehearsals.
  • Teach drumline basics i.e. warm-ups marching techniques and stick work.
  • Teach cadences for marching/playing at athletic school and community events. Choreograph and teach the routine for the winter percussion show.
  • Work with the director during auditions and provide input into placement of students on particular instruments of the drumline.
  • Monitor and control student behavior according to established procedures
  • Maintain inventories of percussion supplies materials and equipment.
  • Adjust and maintain percussion instruments ensuring timely availability for student use. Be able to work outdoors and indoors; exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Assistant Principal or Band Director i.e. conduct ensemble for school celebrations or rallies.
  • Adheres to all policies of the school
  • Maintains an organized and clean office/ work space area storage areas and/ or any other sport related areas that are used by program.
  • Fosters the department and school Philosophy and Mission statements in a spirit of assistance and presence as set out in the teaching system of St. John Paul II Catholic High School.

REQUIRED EDUCATION KNOWLEDGE SKILLS

  • High School Diploma
  • Strong background in marching band percussion performance. Drum corps or university marching band experience preferred.
  • Experience in the various sub groups of the percussion section (e.g. snare bass tenors mallets etc)
  • Previous experience with instructing/teaching percussion.
  • Experience working with high school aged students.
  • Ability to inspire students building enthusiasm and love of the subject
  • Ability to tune/replace drum heads and do minor repairs on drumline equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with students staff parents administrators and community members.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and exercise good judgment in making decisions.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to interact with students of different ages and skill levels in a positive and professional manner.
  • Be responsible for the selection training and performances at designated events.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who are practicing Catholics
  • Knowledge and experience using good teaching techniques that work in a 90-minute class period
  • Must complete the Safe Environment Training and fulfill other diocesan requirements
  • AZ FBI Fingerprint clearance card required
