Summary:
Performs all functions needed to ensure proper storage preparation and dispensing of medications. Interpret and evaluate physician orders for appropriateness and safety. Provides information and recommendations to ensure the safe timely accurate and appropriate administration of medications. Actively participates in governance teaching education and monitoring efforts. Participates in patient care rounding. Develops content and delivers in-services to pharmacy and other healthcare professionals. Complies with all state and federal regulations established peer standards and Hospital policies and procedures. Directly supervises and assists completion of all assigned or delegated work performed by pharmacy technicians to ensure accuracy and efficiency as required by state and federal law.
Responsibilities:
1. Medication Processing and Dispensing
- Reviews interprets and verifies medication orders for safety appropriateness and regulatory compliance in a timely manner. Can resolve basic order entry and prescribing problems.
- Ensures medications are prepared handled labeled stored and dispensed according to applicable law regulatory standards and policies. Understands and complies with required documentation in all areas in a clear concise manner.
- Understands the purchasing process and assists in inventory control to reduce waste.
2. Providing Drug Information and Critical Thinking
- Demonstrates strong problem-solving skills and offers reasonable solutions/options while performing clinical functions and monitoring as assigned.
- Demonstrates current knowledge of relevant diseases and drug therapies and maintains current knowledges of regulations and current trends in pharmacy practice.
- Demonstrates the ability to analyze and communicates drug information and pharmacotherapy recommendations to other healthcare professionals and patients.
- Actively participates in multidisciplinary rounds making medication recommendations and supporting the healthcare team.
3. Patient Counseling and Communication with Patients and Staff
- Educate patients in a respectful and professional manner about their drug therapy to ensure safe use and maximize patient outcomes.
- Communicates any patient needs or findings with the medical team.
- Communicates and provides education to the pharmacy staff to ensure safe and appropriate patient care.
4. Actively Manage Central Pharmacy Workflow
- Ensure all equipment tools and devices are working and appropriately configured for assigned work. Observes in-process work and performs final checks of all work performed by pharmacy technicians.
- Prioritizes and directs daily activities while maintaining a positive and professional work environment to promote teamwork.
- Recognizes and makes suggestions and recommendations to solve problems increase productivity improve department policies and procedures and to promote cost-saving measures.
5. Provides Training Mentoring and Precepting of Students Residents and/or New Hires
6. Understand and comply with all pharmacy regulations and policies including but not limited to USP 795 USP 797 USP 800 Joint Commission medication management applicable state law CMS code of participation.
- Demonstrates knowledge and ability to work and comply with all pharmacy regulations specifically USP 797 and 800 Joint Commission medication management applicable state law drug laws and CMS code of participation.
- Understands the risks and mitigation strategies of handling hazardous medications as defined by USP 800
7. Manages assigned projects and departmental goals.
- Actively participates in Network or local committee(s).

9. Demonstrates regular reliable and predictable attendance.
10. Performs other duties as required.
