JOB SUMMARY

The Radiology APP team works in collaboration with an attending radiologist providing expertise in radiologic procedures and imaging evaluations. The APP exercises autonomy in decision-making and is involved in all phases of patient care including pre-procedure consultation radiologic interventions and post-procedure follow-up. The APP provides direct patient care including physical examination collection and documentation of medical data diagnostic and therapeutic procedures ordering of laboratory studies ordering and conducting of consultations and prescription of appropriate medications. The APP demonstrates excellence in patient care teaching consultation and leadership within the organization.

JOB DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Elicit history and conduct physical examination pertaining to an indicated procedure including medications allergies past medical history imaging studies risk factors and history of present illness
  • Educate patients regarding necessity requirements preparation anticipated effects and risks of the study or procedure
  • Obtain informed consent prior to procedures explaining risks benefits and alternatives.
  • Evaluate images document findings and review preliminary reports with a supervising radiologist
  • Provide patient education and support
  • Assess and treat allergic contrast reactions on DRAH campus
  • Utilize current research and evidence-based decision-making in clinical practice
  • Provide clinical expertise in new patient evaluation and ongoing patient management in interventional radiology including:
      • Collaboration with the healthcare team in comprehensive evaluation and workup of referrals
      • Scheduling new and established patients in the interventional radiology outpatient clinic
      • Conducting and presenting outpatient inpatient and ED consultations
      • Assessment of appropriateness of interventions
      • Order schedule follow up and document appropriate imaging and laboratory tests
      • Ordering and scheduling appropriate interventional radiology procedures including coordination with other medical specialties and healthcare entities
      • Postprocedural follow up with assessment of response to and recovery from interventions to include inpatient rounding and outpatient follow up with documentation
  • Assessment of home health needs and coordination of outpatient services
  • Telephone and electronic communication triage including patient referrals general inquiries and long-term follow-up
  • May perform the following:
    • Patient history and physical exam
    • Venipuncture
    • Paracentesis thoracentesis
    • Barium studies
    • Cystogram
    • Arthrogram
    • Interpretation of laboratory and imaging tests
    • Moderate sedation
    • Bone marrow aspiration and biopsy
    • Lumbar puncture and myelogram
    • Nasoenteric tube placement
    • Central venous catheter placement access and removal
    • Administration of infusion therapy
    • External hemorrhage control
    • Wound/ostomy care
    • Suture/staple removal
    • Manage lines and tubes including drains enteral tubes central venous catheters
    • Other similar procedures under fluoroscopic or ultrasound guidance

JOB ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

Education

PA: Graduate of ARC accredited Physician Assistant program

NP: Graduate of accredited MSN or DNP Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program for adult care.

Certification

PA: PA-C

NP: AGACNP or ACNP only

Licensure

PA: Current unrestricted license issued by the NCMB with approval to practice as PA

NP: Current unrestricted RN license issued by or recognized by the NCBON with approval to practice as an NP.

Both: Federal and State DEA Prescriptive authority

Experience

Both: One-year related APP experience is preferred but will consider new grad especially if there is 3 years RN or Imaging experience.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Able to clearly articulate scope of practice within those guidelines as an NP/PA in the state of North Carolina and within the Duke University Health System (DUHS)
  • Able to independently seek out resources to solve complex problems
  • Able to communicate clearly and work collaboratively with patients families healthcare team physicians leadership and others
  • Able to process and prioritize information perform health assessments treatments and follow-up
  • Able to perform procedures standing while wearing a lead apron
  • Able to use fine motor skills
  • Able to document assessments and interventions.
  • Able to prepare reports and present them to the supervising Radiologist.
  • Able to use radiology computer (PACS) and learn new software programs including the EMR and voice recognition to create reports.
  • Able to provide leadership in clinical area of expertise and in meeting organizational goals
  • Able to respond to and treat allergic reactions to contrast

JOB HOURS

Primary hours will be Monday through Friday day shift with flexible hours to meet the needs of the patients. NO CALL or WEEKEND work required.
