What Youll Do

The Chief Welding Engineer performs work with minimal supervision at a senior level requiring advanced understanding of technical principles theories and concepts in the field of welding. The Chief Welding Engineer will be the program owner of the Y-12 Welding Program and have the final say in all issues regarding the Y-12 Welding Program and associated requirements. Requires a working knowledge of other related disciplines and how those disciplines interface with existing systems. Must be able to effectively represent Y-12 in discussing complex issues with the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB). An emphasis on safe and secure plant operations is paramount.


The Chief Welding Engineer primarily performs work requiring extensive knowledge of welding science and national consensus welding codes and standards (AWS D1.2 ASME B31 ASME Section IX) acquired by a combination of specialized intellectual instruction and experience. The Chief Welding Engineer will use advanced knowledge to analyze interpret and justify technical decisions from multiple variables facts or circumstances.


Candidates must possess multi-disciplinary knowledge of design engineering requirements development calculations applications of engineering and construction methods/materials. Candidates must also be knowledgeable of welding and general aspects of engineering as they related to United States Department of Energy (USDOE) and NNSA requirements.

The Chief Welding Engineer will:

  • Ensure Welding Program compliance with an ability to effectively coordinated engineering and welding issues to senior management customers construction organizations vendors/suppliers engineering groups project teams parent company welding specialists and other groups.
  • Along with other welding engineers perform technical reviews with comments on welding related design documents and specifications for construction.
  • Provide technical support to the Y-12 Welding Inspection group and other welding engineers in Code interpretation or complex welding issues when escalation is required.
  • Sponsor periodic assessments (e.g. independent assessments Parent Company assessments management assessments surveillances) of the Y-12 Welding Program and develop/implement corrective actions associated with welding program issues.

Proficient oral and written communication skills with the ability to develop and conduct clear and precise presentations to senior executives governmental customers engineering groups or other groups is a requirement. Candidate must have excellent time management mentoring listening and critical thinking skills. Candidate must also possess the ability to work in a project team environment follow procedures and work within a rigorous work process.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • A trained welding professional with a BS degree in Welding Engineering/Welding Engineering Technology concentration from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) accredited program.
  • Minimum of twenty years of experience in welding science and the application of national consensus welding codes and standards.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience either in engineering management or an oversight function related to welding.
  • In addition the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e. Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major 2 years job-related and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).DOE 426.2A experience requirements can be satisfied following employment. In the interim newly hired personnel will not be assigned duties that could impact the safety basis of nuclear facilities. (Ref. DOE O 426.2A)

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience as a welding program owner or as a Chief Welding Engineer.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience working as a welding engineer under an NQA-1 quality system.
  • Membership on a national consensus code/standard committee (e.g. AWS ASME B31 ASME Section IX) in a welding related capacity.
  • American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspection Certification.
  • Registered Professional Engineering (state of Tennessee is preferred) or ability to obtain registration.

The minimum education and experience for the lowest career level in the job posting range are listed under Minimum Job Requirements. Successful candidates hired into a higher career level than the minimum in the range must meet the requirements listed in the job leveling charts for the career level into which they are being hired.

If a range of Career Levels is posted i.e. Senior Associate to Senior Specialist internal applicants already in one of the Career Levels would come across at their current Career Level. Internal applicants currently in a lower level Career Level would move to the lowest posted Career Level.

Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status. The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.

Position may require entry into Materials Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (HRP). If HRP is required candidate must complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph pursuant to 10CFR 709. Medical requirements may apply.
