Description

General Description:

The Accountant shall report directly to the Pastor and is responsible for the oversight and management of all parish financial data to ensure its accuracy and compliance with all parish and diocesan regulations. This is a part time position.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Recording Financial Transactions: Accurately record all income expenses and financial activities using the ParishSoft Accounting Offering and Online Giving software suites.
  • Maintaining General Ledger: Ensure the accuracy of the general ledger by managing online banking accounts reconciling accounts and identifying and correcting discrepancies.
  • Preparing Financial Statements: Generate monthly quarterly and annual financial reports as required for presentation to the Pastor and Finance Council. Attend monthly Finance Council meetings. Generate annual contribution statements requested by donors for tax purposes.
  • Supervision and Oversight: Coordinate with the volunteer money counters to ensure all monies are accurately counted and deposited in the parish bank account.
  • Payroll Processing: Manage payroll operations including tracking employee sick and vacation time withholding taxes and issuing payments using the Paylocity software suite.
  • Accounts Payable and Receivable: Track invoices payments and overdue accounts while maintaining strong vendor and client relationships. Manage all automatic payments for recurring bills. Print all required checks and present to the applicable signing authority for signature. Ensure signed checks are delivered to the intended recipient via appropriate means.
  • Bank Reconciliation: Reconcile bank statements with internal records to identify and resolve discrepancies. Coordinate with personnel who have made purchases to provide proof of purchase or receipts using the parish expense form.
  • Budget Development and Monitoring: Assist in the development and implementation of the annual parish budget. Track the budget identifying variances and recommending adjustments.
  • Compliance and Audits: Ensure compliance with financial regulations and assist with internal or external audits.
  • Expense Management: Monitor expenses and recommend cost-saving measures.
  • Tax Preparation: Collaborate with accountants to prepare and file applicable tax returns accurately and on time.
  • Training: Complete all applicable online training sessions. Travel to and attend Diocesan Business forums.


Requirements

Preferred skills and qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent) in business accounting or related field is a plus but not required
  • Preferred 2 years of related accounting work experience is a plus
  • Strong understanding of basic accounting procedures
  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products required (ie: Excel Word)
  • Ability to manage confidential information multiple priorities and competing deadlines plus maintain an attention to detail
  • Professional integrity required to appropriately follow strict internal procedures
  • Ability to collaborate across teams and with individuals using strong interpersonal skills
  • High level of typing accuracy and speed; a strong knowledge of English grammar spelling and punctuation required

Physical/Visual/Mental Demands:

  • This position requires the ability to react to a fast paced and demanding environment; verbally converse with individuals climb stairs and sit for extended periods of time
  • Physical requirements include sitting talking listening reading writing and keying/finger dexterity
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs
  • Requires use of office equipment including telephone personal computer keyboard printers and copiers. Must be able to work with complex and sometimes stressful situations.
