Join the NVFS Family: We are looking to hire a Medication Assistance Caseworker to join the Community Health team!As the Medication Assistance Caseworker (MAC) you will work within the Health Access safety-net programs which serve uninsured families experiencing poverty by linking program participants with free or reduced-rate physician-prescribed medications and other medical supplies. NVFS works in close partnership with area free clinics federally-qualified healthcare centers hospitals Community Services Boards (CSB) and safety-net providers across the region to ensure efficient services and high-quality customer care.
As a MAC you will complete and submit applications to the Patient Assistance Programs (PAPs) on behalf of clients. As a MAC you will work with physicians and pharmaceutical companies to ensure prescriptions are obtained and received by clients in a timely manner. MACs provide case management by monitoring and providing long-term support to clients with chronic conditions by ensuring they have access to prescription medications to improve their health and by making appropriate referrals to other community programs.

This is a full-time position with a pay range in the mid to high 40s.
In this role you will be responsible for:
Prescription Assistance:
- Establish professional relationships with medical providers and medical staff. Educate providers about the PAPs. Conduct regular face-to-face meetings with assigned office manager and/or physicians as needed. Participate in Clinic all-staff meetings.
- Utilize an electronic medical record (EMR) database with assigned clinic(s).
- Manage day-to-day operation of The Pharmacy Connection (TPC) software (a web-based software that helps expedite access to free medicines available from brand-name pharmaceutical companies PAPs) and perform data entry of necessary information into TPC and other databases as needed.
- Understand each pharmaceutical companies requirements and stay up-to-date to changes in policies and procedures as they occur. Attend relevant TPC trainings and funder roundtables.
- Screen patients for income level and determine eligibility for available PAPs.
- Order medications from pharmaceutical companies patient assistance programs including processing refills every 90 days.
- Complete required paperwork for each pharmaceutical company; obtain supporting documentation from clients including income verifications and Medicaid denial-letters.
- Communicate to providers when medications are not available on PAPs and suggest alternative prescription medicines.
- Track clients medication pick-up adherence and timing of refills in coordination with medical office staff.
- Maintain client files electronic and hard copy if needed - in a timely manner and in accordance with program requirements and NVFS guidelines and enter required information in program database(s).
- As needed make comprehensive service referrals in response to the clients holistic needs; and work with other community providers to provide collaborative services to clients comprehensive needs.
Program Development:
- Maintain knowledge of eligibility requirements for:
- Prescription assistance programs brand name medications generic medications discount prescription programs offered at pharmacies;
- State public health benefits including Medicaid and Medicare programs;
- The Virginia Insurance Marketplace (VIM) (formerly the Affordable Care Act).
- Understand and keep updated on the social-services safety-net landscape in designated service area (example. Prince William Fairfax or Loudoun counties).
- Participate in regular supervision with supervisor including providing regular updates on status of work activities.
- Collaborate with other Community Health (CH) team members to stay up-to-date on other program offerings within CHE and across other programs at NVFS. Refer clients to other NVFS programs as appropriate.
- Assist program supervisor and manager prepare reports on program progress.
- Help prepare marketing products (e.g. flyers brochures etc) for education and outreach purposes.
Your Background:We understand that you may obtain skills through a variety of professional personal educational and volunteer experiences.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Pharmacy Technician certificate preferred but not required
- Experience working in a medical office preferred
- Work experience such as case management and care coordination; healthcare system access and navigation preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to provide culturally appropriate service delivery and the ability to communicate respectfully clearly effectively tactfully and patiently in-person and on the phone to a diverse population
- Oral and written fluency in English; Spanish language fluency may be required depending on program
- Strong interpersonal and analytical skills
- Proficiency in usage of basic technological tools including laptops/computers email phones and internet; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
