The Wildlife Resource Assistant works at the primary reception desk in the Sioux Falls Regional Office/Outdoor Campus and serves as an information resource person for the public as well as agency staff. The position generally works 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday but may work an occasional weekend day or into the evening hours infrequently throughout the year. The position provides information and responds to phone email and in-person public inquiries from hunters anglers and other outdoor users regarding license questions regulations or assistance needs. The position will also assist department staff with special work activities including various law enforcement tasks wildlife surveys urban deer hunting program special outreach and education events and more. The position answers a wide variety of public and staff inquiries regarding sale or replacement of hunting and fishing licenses; hunting and fishing licensing requirements and eligibility; disability and other special permits; hunting fishing and trapping season regulations. This position provides a broad array of information to the public regarding wildlife and fish species their habits and habitats. The Wildlife Resource Assistant utilizes a wide variety of information resources to accurately respond to these inquiries. The position will also provide assistance to agency staff in developing GIS maps updating information databases and compiling monthly vehicle reports and other reports as needed. ARCGIS training along with a variety of personal development training opportunities will be provided to the candidate selected in accordance with their interests and office work requirements. The position will also be trained in the following specific task/duty assignments:
sale and auditing of hunting fishing trapping and park entrance licenses through use of the GoOutdoorsSD website;
working knowledge of applicable regulations for issuance of replacement and sale of over-the-counter big game licenses;
working knowledge of applicable regulations and requirements for issuance of a variety of disabled hunter permits.

Licenses and Certifications:
The position will undergo basic safety training covering the operation of ATVs UTVs and other specialty equipment.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A BS Degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology or a natural resources/related field or college-level coursework in wildlife and fisheries management and identification; work experience in fish wildlife or wildlife habitat management; and personal experience and knowledge of hunting fishing boating and trapping activities would be beneficial.
Knowledge of:
hunting fishing and trapping seasons regulations and license requirements;
wildlife identification and wildlife habits and habitats;
fish and wildlife management concepts and challenges;
licensing administration requirements.
Skill to:
effectively deal with a wide variety of customer questions and customer inquiries related to license sales fish and wildlife management concerns and opportunities that exist for hunting fishing and trapping.
Ability to:
deal effectively with a wide range of customers from different cultural and socio-economic backgrounds;
deal effectively with difficult or sometimes emotional people in a wide variety of circumstances;
function effectively as part of an inter-office work team.
