Who were looking for
CBC Northwest Territories (NWT) is looking for an experienced journalist to help lead a team that drives local innovative storytelling on audio digital video and social platforms. Our search is for someone whos decisive creative and passionate about everything that makes the NWT what it is people communities cultures languages arts sports politics and businesses.
As an assignment producer you will co-ordinate a team of reporters that brings our audiences breaking news information and insight across CBC Norths various programs and platforms including radio news and current affairs CBC Northbeat and are looking for someone with a passion for news someone who loves the thrill of the chase and the responsibility of getting focused information and insight to our audiences quickly and thoughtfully. You are organized detail-oriented and confident in making decisions and giving definitive direction. Youre also open to suggestions and dialogue.
Experience working in news on all platforms will ground how you assign reporters on a day-to-day basis. You may also gather for audio digital and video as required. You demonstrate sound journalistic and critical judgment initiative and creativity. You have a strong knowledge of the NWTs Indigenous communities. A good knowledge of the territorys news and current affairs its cultures characters and histories is a significant asset.
You will have the opportunity to initiate ideas and produce stories and projects. There will be latitude for initiative independent judgment and creativity and a requirement to adhere to CBC journalistic and program policies standards and practices. You will work with an editorial leadership team led by the NWTs Executive Producer.
As required you will perform the following tasks:
Stay on top of local and regional news and current affairs from a variety of sources and also assist in mapping out and scheduling coverage.
Respond to and help lead breaking news coverage.
Regularly conceive and develop original and relevant story ideas.
Mentor and coach new reporters through regular constructive feedback and follow up.
Lead daily meetings on news coverage.
Work with other producers to help plan assign and co-ordinate preparation of radio newscasts video news stories and digital stories.
Research gather write and/or edit stories and support others in the same tasks.
Vet and edit broadcast copy stories and text written by others.
Plan and participate in longer term projects that support the objectives of the NWT station as established by the Executive Producer.
Communicate and collaborate with colleagues in other locations regarding NWT local stories that could be relevant in other regions and across CBC network programming.
Identify any risks for staff going out on assignments and participate in any necessary risk assessments.
Cultivate new sources to help better represent people communities and perspectives in the NWT.
Build relationships with our audiences.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
An aptitude for multiplatform story rollout with advanced knowledge of video audio and digital production.
Demonstrated experience in leading and motivating a team or unit.
Demonstrated coaching mentoring and vetting skills.
Superior editorial skills and judgment and demonstrated knowledge of CBCs journalistic standards and practices.
Strong interest in video.
Highly developed interpersonal problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
Highly developed organizational skills; ability to multi-task and manage multiple demands and deadlines.
A valid drivers licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canadas insurance company.
University degree or equivalent preferred.
At least five years of relevant experience is preferred.
