Civil Enforcement Division Consumer Protection - Attorney-in-Charge
The Oregon Department of Justice is seeking an outstanding leader and litigator to be the next Attorney-in-Charge of the Consumer Protection Section of the Civil Enforcement Division. This position is Portland-based with opportunities for working remotely on a hybrid schedule.
Consumer Protection is a policy priority of the Attorney General. The Consumer Protection Section protects Oregonians against consumer fraud and abuse through outreach and education and by invoking the Attorney Generals civil enforcement authority to deter stop and punish unlawful conduct. The section assists consumers by addressing consumer complaints providing alerts about scams offering educational resources and enforcing the Unlawful Trade Practices Act commonly known as Oregons consumer protection law.
The Attorney-in-Charge (AIC) leads a multidisciplinary team of attorneys investigators legal support staff and consumer complaint specialists to accomplish this important mission. The AIC will have the opportunity to develop relationships with colleagues around the country in a multistate practice. The AIC will help build out and expand Oregons consumer protection efforts. The AIC will play an important role in strategic planning for the section as well is in recruiting mentoring and developing section attorneys.
The AIC will coordinate with Civil Enforcement Division leadership other sections within the Department and the Office of the Attorney General. The AIC will have the opportunity to influence enforcement decisions through selecting cases and developing investigative and legal strategies. The AIC also assists in responding to media and public records inquiries and may also interact with legislators and their staff.
The AIC is part of the Civil Enforcement Division management team and helps formulate and implement policy for the division and the department. Required
Active membership in good standing with the Oregon State Bar prior to appointment or reciprocity in progress at the time of application.
At least five years of plaintiff-side civil litigation experience in the last ten years.
At least five years of experience in leadership roles (e.g. first-chair attorney leading teams toward trial practice group lead Assistant Attorney-in-Charge etc.)
Ability to lead and motivate teams make critical decisions and remain calm under pressure.
Ability to execute the goals and priorities of the Attorney General through management of operations people and their work.
Commitment to fostering diversity and professionalism in the workplace and creating a positive work culture
Excellent legal analytical negotiation research writing and public speaking skills.
Experience with interpreting explaining and implementing complex laws and rules.
Experience directing and evaluating program performance prioritizing responsibilities assessing business needs and coordinating the activities of supervisory professional and administrative staff.
Desired
At least two years of prior management experience.
Experience with consumer protection or fraud prosecution cases.
Experience coordinating with other agencies or states.
Experience testifying before a legislative body.
