Job Description

Type of Appointment: Full Time Temporary

Job Classification:Administrator I

Anticipated Hiring Range: $85000 minimum (Commensurate on experience)

Work Schedule:Monday - Friday 8 am to 5 pm


THE DEPARTMENT:

The California State University (CSU) Agricultural Research Institute (ARI) is a comprehensive applied agricultural and natural resources applied research program joining six ARI campuses and allied disciplines across the CSU system with the states agriculture and natural resource industries and allied business communities. The ARI supports applied research in agriculture natural resources and food systems and develops the next generation of leaders in these fields. The ARIs applied research and talent development programs helps improve food safety environmental stewardship economic performance and long-term sustainability of Californias agriculture and natural resource industries. ARI projects and programs augment enhance and extend the basic research conducted by the nations land grant universities. Under general oversight from the CSU Chancellor and the leadership and direction of the CSU ARI Board of Governors the ARI Executive Director is responsible for developing strategic initiatives and direction and the overall performance coordination and accountability of the ARI program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Industry Relations

  • Develop and maintain relationships with agricultural industry partners throughout California including commodity boards marketing orders trade groups and individual companies.
  • Educate agricultural and natural resource industries about the value and impact of ARI applied research and workforce development via ongoing and regular outreach to these groups.
  • Build and maintain database of contacts and regularly communicate with these contacts
  • Deliver presentations to industry groups and engage with industry and commodity boards to learn of their research needs
  • Help develop industry-focused communications including emails and newsletters and help craft and implement strategic communications via social media.

Government Relations

  • Coordinate an conduct briefings with relevant state and federal agencies and departments legislators elected officials and their staff about the value and impact of ARI applied research and workforce development
  • Create and maintain a database of elected officials and staff in areas of high priority for ARI and regularly communicate with these individuals
  • Coordinate invitations to elected officials and staff to tour ARI campuses to learn about the program and locally conducted research.
  • Attend and provide support for ARI meetings events and trade shows.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelors Degree - In political science communications public relations business journalism or related fields. If an agricultural / natural resource field must have demonstrated experience in government affairs and community outreach.
  • Three or more years of progressive professional experience in government relations public affairs and community outreach
  • Knowledge of California agriculture including issues and opportunities facing California agriculture natural resources and food systems.

  • Previous experience in developing communication and marketing materials.
  • Previous public relations experience.
  • Demonstrated skills in written and verbal communications.
  • Knowledge of University and CSU organization policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of University of California particularly UC ANR organization policies and procedures.
  • Experience and/or education in agriculture or science-based field.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and graphics/editing platforms
  • Experience with social media platforms and messaging/branding campaigns
  • Experience and/or education in agriculture or science-based field.
  • Ability to use tact and diplomacy to effectively handle a broad range of high level and sensitive interpersonal situations with diverse personalities and to respond appropriately to conflicts and problems
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional contacts and networks.
  • Ability to analyze operational and procedural problems to develop recommend and evaluate proposed solutions
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative.

  • Skill in collection and evaluation of data to develop valid conclusions and recommendations.

Out of State Work

The California State University (CSU) system is a network of twenty-three public universities providing access to a quality education through the support of California taxpayers. Part of CSUs mission is to prepare educated responsible individuals to contribute to Californias schools economy culture and future. As an agency of the State of California the CSUs business operations almost exclusively reside within California. CSU Classification Salary Range

The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on theCSU Classification Standards website. The CSU Salary Schedule is located on theCSU Salary Schedule website. The classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum $4135 and maximum $12288 per month. University Driving Requirement

Positions that require driving for university business by using a personal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Drivers license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points if their license is Class C or 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points if their license is Class A B or C with endorsements. For more information go to the
