Job Description
Description of Work
This is a repost. Previous applicants must reapply to be considered.The purpose of this position is to employ a non-attorney legal professional (paralegal) to assist the staff attorneys in the Special Litigation unit of the Attorney Generals office who are primarily involved in litigation and other matters related to the Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) with the major tobacco companies as well as enforcement of State statutes regulating tobacco companies not participating in the MSA and seeking approval to sell tobacco products in the State.
Document Management:
This position conducts extensive review and verification of financial information provided by tobacco companies selling and/or seeking to sell tobacco products in the State NAAG and of tax revenue worksheets and documents provided by the Department of Revenue.
Develops and maintains filing systems and procedures for lawsuits for the MSA and other related matters.
Research:
This position will organize catalog and analyze the results of research to formulate demand letters interrogatories and other related legal documents.
Drafting:
This position will draft and finalize correspondence pleading memorandum and other related documents.
Litigation preparation:
Additionally this position works as a team member in litigation support of major lawsuits by performing a wide variety of legal research and organizational tasks. Tasks are varied as required by the demand of the particular litigation. As time permits this position is also involved in generating criminal briefs assigned to the section.Note to Current State Employees:The salary grade for this position is LG05. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY or MAY NOT result.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Ability to perform legal research in accordance with preliminary instructions as to methods or approach source material available and policy and precedent of the office. Ability to summarize facts and evidence and prepare legal instruments. Ability to communicate clearly and logically in oral and written form. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Graduation from an appropriately accredited institution for paralegal training and three years of experience as a paralegal; or Bachelors degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of substantive paralegal experience; or High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and seven years of paralegal experience performing delegated substantive legal work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
