Barkley Project Group (BPG) is a small consulting firm specializing in project management services for clean energy and energy efficiency projects and other community-owned initiatives. We are based in Nanaimo BC and currently work with more than 30 First Nations communities in British Columbia and the Yukon. We support Indigenous communities by providing project management and administration capacities on a project-specific basis. About the Role
Reporting to the Geothermal Team Lead the Project Manager Geothermal is responsible for managing geothermal exploration and development projects by working closely with Indigenous communities and our team of Project Coordinators and Geoscientists. This position is a critical leadership role in delivering feasibility drilling and development stages of community-based geothermal heat and power projects. Geothermal project type will vary depending on community needs but may include geothermal heated agricultural initiatives industrial heat uses eco-tourism hot springs development electricity generation and others.
The Project Manager is a mentor and shares skills expertise and experience with other team members as required for team development and project success. The Project Manager has a foundational understanding of geothermal energy and a genuine interest in working with Indigenous communities in Canadas emerging geothermal industry.
What You Will Be Doing
- Lead and advance geothermal exploration drilling and development projects through Initiating Planning Execution Monitoring & Controlling and Closing stages
- Work directly with project team and community contacts to develop scope of work timeline budget implementation strategy based on community objectives priorities and resources
- Identify and pursue funding requirements and funding strategies maintaining a good relationship with external funding entities
- Update and maintain accurate project budgets including invoice approvals and change management with the support of the Project Coordinator
- Develop and track project schedules with the support of the Project Coordinator
- Develop and maintain respectful and high-quality relationships with team members industry members and with community contacts
- Support team members in task execution as needed and hold ultimate accountability for delivering high quality and community-specific deliverables
- Adapt and develop departmental processes and documentation as needed including but not limited to project management geothermal project-specific execution strategy and lessons learned
- Provide professional development encouragement to Project Coordinators and community hires; create opportunities for hands-on learning and mentorship
- Engage communities at all project stages including updating outreach material preparation for community presentations and ongoing communication with contacts community liaisons and participants with the support of project team members
- Participate in a safety-first mindset and work with site personnel to encourage a culture of safety
- Provide regular project status reports tailored to project owners and stakeholders and maintain excellent communications with key project team members
- Supervise field staff to document daily site activities and to develop and implement Quality Assurance on behalf of the engineering team (third-party) as required
- Work closely and collaboratively with BPG Geoscientists to deliver high-quality community-specific geothermal exploration activities
- Chair regular project team meetings and ensure detailed and accurate minutes of meetings
- Ensure adequate systems are in place for documentation and communication flow including document control of geothermal exploration analysis and results drilling program details engineered drawings quality control requirements etc.
- Lead and advance all project procurement requirements including contract development review and administration
- Coordinate with engineering and drilling or construction management team to schedule site visits at appropriate times
- Work with field personnel to handle project issues as they arise
- Liaise with communities technical teams government agencies and stakeholders throughout all project stages
- Contribute ideas energy and personal commitment to help foster a positive and rewarding work environment and to help maintain and grow a successful innovative high-quality project management consulting practice at Barkley Project Group
- Provide identification of business development and value-added opportunities for client and Company consideration on an opportunistic basis
- All other duties or tasks as assigned by your manager
What You Will Need
- 3 to 7 years of relvenat work experience in a Project Management role
- An undergraduate degree or advanced diploma in applied sciences engineering geology or related field
- Basic knowledge of geothermal energy resources uses technologies and systems
- Experience advancing community infrastructure or renewable energy projects from development through procurement to implementation and operations on a community or municipal scale or equivalent
- Management and leadership experience including project development permitting resourcing mentorship and team skills development within a multi-disciplinary team
- Demonstrated project management experience in community and/or industrial development or construction settings with project values in the $1M-$100M range.
- Strong and diverse understanding of techno-socio-economic aspects of community project development
- Experience collaborating with and working for Indigenous communities and clients is an asset
- Experience working in northern Canadian territories is an asset
- Experience with geothermal exploration techniques is an asset
- Experience with drilling activities is an asset
- Experience identifying securing and managing funding from government and non-governmental granting organizations
- PMP or designation is an asset
Working Conditions
- Fully remote
- Core work hours are 10:00am-3:00pm Monday to Friday 40 hours per week required
- Travel will be required to field assignments across BC western and northern Canada including remote communities requiring a valid drivers license and reliable transportation
Compensation & Benefits
- Compensation pay range for this position is between $97000 to $116000 per year.
- Extended health & dental benefits and paid sick time also included.
