POSITION FUNCTION

Coordinate and participate in lifeguard functions to ensure the safety of patrons using the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre.

KEY DUTIES

Coordinate review and participate in the work of approximately 3 FTE lifeguard/instructor staff; ensure procedures and established performance and safety standards are met; provide input to employee performance appraisals; assist with in-house training sessions; complete time sheets.

Monitor patrons at the Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre; render assistance to swimmers in distress; provide first aid as required; ensure adherence to pool policies.

Provide information to pool patrons regarding rules hours of operation or other available services; complete incident and first aid reports.

Prepare pool for public use and ensure that all facilities are operational; set up pool for various functions such as swim meets and public swims.

Perform swim lesson administrative duties such as preparing class lists ensuring accurate completion of instructor worksheets and recording of course grades.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress.

Problems such as changes to pool set up are referred to supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Effort:

Lift and move heavy equipment. (rare)

Stand and walk on pool deck. (often)

Mental Effort:

Short periods of intense concentration while working on pool deck. (frequent)

Visual/Auditory Effort:

Normal.

Work Environment:

Aquatic recreation facility.

Work irregular hours. (premium item)

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Understand and apply principles of water rescue and first aid.

Basic level operation of a personal computer.

Complete forms accurately.

Supervise a small staff.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.

Work Safely on jobsite.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education Training and Occupational Certification:

Grade 10.

Current Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard Service (Pool Option) Certification (NLS).

(44 hours)

Current Standard First Aid Certification (SFA). (16 hours)

Annual C.P.R. Level C Certification (CPR-C). (8 hours)

Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI). (37 hours)

Required to obtain criminal record clearance.

Experience:

1 year of related experience including experience providing instruction/leadership to others.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
