UHNs Centre for Mental Health

This goal is being advanced by a team of 100 psychiatrists 300 interdisciplinary staff as well as 70 learners and researchers spread across six clinical divisions at CMH: Acute Care & General Psychiatry Depression Eating Disorders Medical Psychiatry Outpatient Mental Health & Addictions Services and Seniors Mental Health.

Building synergy amongst Canadas top research hospital and third-ranked hospital in the world (UHN) with Canadas top mental health research hospital (CAMH) in a publicly-funded healthcare system creates unique conditions to truly deliver innovative whole body care and inspire scientists to delve into new research questions based on emerging knowledge of the brain-body connection. 

Overview of Clinical Research Manager Role

Working under the direction of the Joint Program Medical Director CAMH-UHN Partnership and Director Transformation & Partnerships the Clinical Research Manager will provide clinical study coordination services and program development expertise to Centre for Mental Healths Research Program in alignment with the Krembil Research Institute. This includes a team of 40 Physician PIs 12 non-MD researchers as well as graduate and post-graduate students.

The primary accountabilities of this role include:

  1. Contributing to the growth and development of CMHs Research Program (e.g. through the development of grant applications pursing cross-organizational research opportunities with CAMH establishing core operational processes in alignment with Krembil Research Institute)
  2. Overseeing study coordination and regulatory management aspects of clinical trials and other research projects (e.g. hiring/managing research staff administration and distribution of workload communicating with study sponsors performing quality control and assurance as required)
  3. Management of research finances including operational budget development and ongoing monitoring.
  4. Overall the candidate should be skillful in identifying problems using assessment skills and be solution oriented.

Duties of the Clinical Research Manager include (but are not limited to):

  • Develop implement and maintain high-quality clinical trial procedures and processes
  • Liaise with investigators administrative staff sponsors and clinical trials staff
  • Hire manage and support research staff and learners
  • Update Program Leadership on clinical trial activities including administrative protocol-related data management quality and regulatory issues and staffing
  • Support the development of grant applications
  • Develop project-specific budgets
  • Track and reconcile study expenses with study budgets
  • Oversee monitoring and quality assurance processes
  • Provide training for and enforce standard operating procedures
  • Maintain training and proficiency of study coordinators and clinical trials staff who are responsible for the data coordination
  • Ensure fiscal responsibility and resource management to cost recovery services
  • Support program initiatives of process improvement
  • Develop program guidance documentation to support the research team
  • Provide clarity in roles and responsibilities to functional teams across the program
  • Performing cross-functional and other duties consistent with the job classification as assigned and or requested

Qualifications :

  • At minimum a completion of a bachelors degree program or recognized equivalent in Health or Science Related Discipline. 
  • 3-5 years clinical and/or professional experience and 2-3 years supervisory/management experience
  • Experience of submitting clinical research protocols for regulatory approvals i.e. research ethics board applications Health Canada submissions
  • Experience of developing grant proposals and scientific writing
  • Possess leadership and managerial skills and have recognized experience in these areas
  • Experience in research program outcome analysis
  • Experience in the development and writing business operation plans
  • Ability to manage tight deadlines
  • Excellent project management skills
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrate relevant clinical research knowledge
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills excellent organization prioritization skills good computer skills ability to learn quickly and work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and attention to detail
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards
  • Ability to perform multiple concurrent tasks
  • Knowledge of applicable legislative UHN and/or departmental policies
  • Client service oriented with the ability to effectively work with diversity and appreciate that people with different opinions backgrounds and characteristics bring richness to the challenge or situation at hand
  • Certification as a Clinical Research Professional preferred
  • Work in compliance with UHN Vaccination Policy
