Job Description

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the nations largest public housing authority with an operating budget of $3.3 billion and approximately 10600 employees who manage and maintain 325 developments that house over 400000 residents.

The Pest Management Department employs more than 300 people responsible for the reduction of pests in apartments interior spaces such as basements and grounds. Half of the staff is made up of exterminators who follow an integrated pest management philosophy and goals set around vacuuming pesticide use and sealing of holes. The unit also employs teams working on supplies work order planning program and data management and specialized teams working with snap traps bed bugs rats exclusion resident engagement and burrow collapsing.

Reporting to the Administrator of Program Management the Entomologist is responsible for supporting and running various projects to better our pest management policies. Under direct supervision receives training in and with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment performs beginning level scientific and applied research and analysis in the study of entomology.

The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
-Assist with and conducts assigned research investigations and analysis of specific problems in entomology including literature reviews survey and questionnaire design and implementation
field studies and data analysis. We will be participating in grant funded studies led by universities on roaches and rats. The PMD entomologist will be the departments liaison with them to
make sure the studies run smoothly and we can use the results to better improve our practices.
-Identify new and/or existing products (equipment and materials) to be integrated into the existing Standard Procedure for Pest Control (SP).
-Assist with and contribute to the design execution and interpretation of experiments around new pest control products.
-Work closely with the technical team in the development evaluation and implementation of new IPM strategies and techniques for cockroaches bed bugs mice rats and other household
pests.
-Assist the technical team in the continuous evaluation and modification of the Pest Control Standard Procedures to incorporate pest control equipment materials and methods that increase
the effectiveness and efficiency in which pests complaint work orders are handled.
-Provide support for the training team to update existing training material and develop new training tools integrating both scientific and applied information to provide a high level of education
and understanding to support all aspects associates with effective execution of the Pest Control SP. This includes training for community planners exterminators supervisors of exterminators
data analysts etc.)
-Maintain records write reports prepare and conduct presentations especially in coordination with trainings of exterminators which occur about 4 times a year.
-Utilize maximo data warehouse and other dashboards to support research and analysis around exterminator performance and compliance.

Qualifications :

1. For Assignment Level I (only physical biological and environmental sciences and public health) A masters degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A masters degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical biological environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to 1 or 2 above. However all candidates must have at least a masters degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in 2 above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in 1 and 2 above.

Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
