Job Description

Job Title: Athletic Trainer

Location: Charlottesville High School

Reports to: Athletic Director

FLSA Status: Exempt

Summary:

The Athletic Trainer is responsible for preventing and treating athletic injuries. The Athletic Trainer is directly involved in the phases of health care of the athletes including injury prevention injury evaluation immediate first aid and rehabilitation. The Athletic Trainer assists coaches by advising and treating athletes to maintain maximum physical fitness.

Essential Functions:

  • Administer first aid and assistance to injured student athletes to provide appropriate immediate care as required
  • Assist coaches and officials during athletic events to respond to equipment and/or medical needs of student athletes
  • Consult with physicians and other medical personnel (e.g. referrals physical exams fitting of braces etc.) to develop course of treatment for injured athletes
  • Develop a variety of programs in cooperation with coaches (e.g. conditioning injury prevention etc.) to prevent injury to students
  • Evaluate facility and playing field for potential hazards inadequate equipment etc. to implement modifications or recommendations that would reduce the risk of injury
  • Maintain athletic equipment and supply inventory to ensure that items are readily available as needed
  • Maintain student treatment and health records to communicate and/ or document information in accordance with established policies procedures and regulations
  • Orient student athletes parents and coaches etc. regarding potential health risk of athletic participation in athletics to implement preventive strategies
  • Process a variety of documents relating to injuries (e.g. accident/injury reports records of treatment etc.) to communicate and document information in accordance with established polices procedures and regulations
  • Respond to emergency situations (e.g. injury disturbance etc.) to resolve immediate safety concerns
  • Schedule medical staff and emergency medical equipment to ensure adequate coverage for athletic events
  • Participate in athlete and parent meetings prior to each season to share information about safety and expectations
  • Collaborate with other division and medical community to create and implement necessary policies and procedures such as the Concussion Protocol
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure and efficient and effective athletic program

Skills Knowledge and Abilities:

Skills are required to perform multiple technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions; specific skills include adhering to safety practices administering first aid and CPR; operating standard office equipment with pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; knowledge to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical materials; and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions; specific knowledge includes age appropriate activities and health standards and hazards; ability to schedule a significant number of activities meets and/or events; gather collate and/or classify data; use of job-related equipment; flexibility to independently work with others in a variety of situations; work with data but with differently defined processes; ability to work is a significantly diversity of individuals and/or groups; independent problem solving to analyze issues and create action plans; using data for independent interpretation of guidelines; specific abilities include developing and maintaining effective relationships especially school aged students; displaying tact and courtesy; adapting to changing work priorities; communication with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as a part of a team; and working with numerous interruptions

Education and/or Experience:

Bachelors Degree in job-related field is required. Certification in Medical Training Aid and CPR are required. Previous experience in the field of athletic training is preferred.

Physical Conditions and Nature of Work:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job require the following physical demands: lifting carrying pulling and pushing; some climbing and balancing; stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job required 40% sitting 30% walking and 30% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and some hazardous conditions. Work schedules are determined by the principal or principals designee.

Evaluation:

The Athletic Trainer is evaluated by the Athletic Director.
