Job Description

TITLE: Department Chair/Grades K-12 for Library/Media (.4) & Library Media Teacher (.6) WORK YEAR: 190 days REPORTS TO: Building Principal DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: Library Department JOB DESCRIPTION: Department Chair (.4) is directly responsible to the building principal and is supervised and evaluated by the building principal. The Department Chair will supervise and oversee the Library/Media Department and his/her teaching load will not exceed 60% or .6 except as agreed per contract. Therefore this is a 100% full-time position. EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. In accordance with Rhode Islands Right to Read Act all educators must demonstrate awareness of and/or proficiency in the Science of Reading. Preferred candidates will have completed an approved Right to Read training program or possess current certification of proficiency or awareness. If not already trained the selected candidate must demonstrate a willingness to complete approved training within their first year of / LICENSE REQUIRED: Certificates required by the Rhode Island State Department of Education. Current Rhode Island Teacher Certificates in the appropriate subject area and level. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES: 1. Develop write and review curriculum for the department. 2. Supervise teachers in the department and evaluate teachers in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement using the RI Teacher Evaluator Model/approved tool by RIDE. The candidate must be or become trained in the appropriate teacher evaluator tool. Provide non-evaluative feedback through classroom observations on non-cycle years for their department.3. Advocate for students to receive high quality instruction based on best practices and relevant standards and curriculum.4. Serve as a member of the School Improvement Team.5. Provide planning and grading support to department substitutes in the event of an extended teacher absence.6. Work collaboratively with content teachers district-wide.7. Prepare annual departmental budget requests.8. Prepare quarterly updates for the district teaching and learning newsletter as well as share department happenings monthly in the PHS Patriot newsletter for students and their families. 9. Facilitate credit recovery in the department by collaborating with teachers on completing CCA modify curriculum based on student need and act as the teacher of record when necessary.9. Employ Data-driven educational decision process by examining state national and local assessment data to identify student strengths and deficiencies and apply those findings to student improvement systems. as a member of the Building Leadership Team which includes duties as listed but not limited to class assignments and other department duties as : Base salary plus stipend in accordance with NEA Portsmouth contract. Annual appointmentMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:1. Hold a professional secondary grades certificate in the specific content area.2. A Masters Degree from an approved institution is required preferably in the area of responsibility. Individuals who do not have a Masters Degree (30/36 credit hours) may apply for and be considered forthe position; however said credentials shall not be considered on equal footing with candidatespossessing a Masters Degree.3. Three years of successful teaching in the secondary grades.
