Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Testing & Troubleshooting: Conduct experiments and tests to characterize component and system performance in electrical and optical/fiber assemblies using various test equipment such as multimeters oscilloscopes arbitrary waveform generators spectrum analyzers power meters beam profilers and signal generators. Troubleshoot and diagnose issues with assemblies identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions. Write test procedures and document test results accurately and thoroughly. Communicate test results for component and system-level testing to other members of the team.
- Develop and Test of Prototype Systems: Participate in the design development integration and assembly of fiber-based bulk optic opto-mechanical and opto-electrical systems and components for lab experiments prototypes and customer deliverables. Design and set up experiments and test fixtures. Perform precise assembly repair and testing at the component and system level (includes soldering cable harness fabrication and fiber optic splicing).
Education & Experience
- A minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelors degree; or 3 years and a Masters degree; or a PhD without years experience; or technical background/training with advanced relevant experience.
- Technical Know-How:Strong knowledge of laser systems and analog and digital electronics. Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook Word PowerPoint Excel Teams).
- Experience soldering for building cable assemblies and rework of circuit boards.
- Experience assembling aligning and cleaning of bulk optics (e.g. mirrors lenses polarizers filters etc.)
- Experience developing test applications using LabVIEW or other programming languages/tools is a plus.
- Experience Testing and Evaluating Prototype Systems:Past experience developing and executing test procedures testing integrated hardware/software systems and documenting results.
Skills & Other Requirements
- Hands-On Skills: Experience using test equipment such as multimeters oscilloscopes arbitrary waveform generators spectrum analyzers power meters beam profilers and signal generators. Experience with hand tools and basic power tools. Experience assembling and splicing optical fiber and fiber-coupled components. Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision and as part of a team. Ability to identify and develop approaches to solving problems.
- Eligibility for a U.S. Government security clearance if one is required to perform job responsibilities.
Working Conditions
Primarily an engineering function with office and engineering lab working conditions. Also includes work in a cleanroom environment which requires wearing cleanroom apparel such as a gown shoe covers hairnet and gloves.
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift/move test equipment up to 50 lb. Ability to perform fiber splicing component assembly and optic alignment tasks which requires use of hand tools. Ability to perform circuit board rework soldering cable assembly and component assembly tasks which requires use of hand tools and soldering tools.
