Job Description Summary:

Under limited supervision the Irrigation Technician IV is responsible for performing complex non-routine tasks to improve the Central Control Communication System and enhance infrastructure management through GIS. The primary focus of this position is to ensure that the Central Control System and all irrigation assets are accurately maintained and updated within ArcGIS. Key responsibilities include: Building and configuring irrigation controllers Establishing and maintaining communication with controllers Troubleshooting and updating hardware and firmware Performing field-based communication checks maintenance and issue resolution Using field devices computers and software to collect irrigation data Generating maps and updating the irrigation asset management database. This role plays a critical part in optimizing irrigation efficiency and supporting effective infrastructure management throughout our park system.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs component layout building controllers utilizing appropriate electronic Central Control components modules surge protection cabinets assorted hardware and installation of new irrigation controllers.

  • Installs maintains and troubleshoots modem radio and wi-fi communications system.

  • Works with contractors/suppliers regarding Central Control troubleshooting firmware updates and general use questions.

  • Reviews system generated trouble warnings daily and generates work orders for oneself and discusses Irrigation issues with Technicians within their assigned areas if appropriate.

  • Uses electrical testing equipment such as volt-ohm meter fault locator line locator and toning device for troubleshooting maintenance and repairs.

  • Uses GIS to update and map existing irrigation infrastructure and new infrastructure.

  • Works with GIS analyst senior parks asset manager and irrigation manager & assets manager regarding Beehive and ArcGIS etc.

  • Updates GIS devices including R2 and iPad.

  • Updates GIS mapping to current design so irrigation techs can best trouble shoot irrigation problems located in parks.

  • Troubleshoots diagnoses and repairs irrigation system problems including but not limited to mainlines point of connection assemblies electric valves backflow devices manual valves master valves wiring and electrical connections controllers sprinkler heads and improper hydraulic conditions.

  • Assists with installing commercial scale sprinkler systems including but not limited to point of connection backflow prevention pressure regulation master valves controllers field wiring various types of pipe and fittings sprinkler heads electric valves etc.

  • Assists irrigation lead(s) to develop a water schedule per park site based on that sites monthly water budget.

  • Assists with writing specifications for irrigation materials and supplies as needed.

  • Maintains accurate records of work performed including but not limited to asset management software system.

  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate irrigation repair parts inventory.

  • Enforces safety procedures regulations and policies to create a secure work environment.

  • Ultimately responsible for completing repairs in a safe proper and timely fashion.

  • Schedules and performs maintenance tasks on equipment ensuring the longevity of equipment.

  • Responds promptly to emergency situations which may include addressing tree damage flood recovery and other urgent matters.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to preform a wide range of physical and manual tasks outdoors and under all weather conditions including the ability to stand kneel and bend frequently and for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to work irregular hours weekends evenings holidays or emergencies as required to respond to Parks and Forestry maintenance needs including on-call for snow removal or tree related emergencies.

  • Ability to plan work activities assist in providing performance feedback and to plan schedules to meet objectives and goals of mission statement and to keep accurate and timely records of work performed.

  • Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with co-workers and the public

  • Ability to perform record keeping functions data entry and data management.

  • Ability to in logically use troubleshooting techniques to identify field problems with controllers master valves and all other related Irrigation components.

  • Ability to demonstrate experience in testing new and repaired equipment to ensure proper functioning.

  • Ability to maintain and calibrate test equipment including marking of Irrigation electrical wiring.

  • Ability to help manage irrigation pump systems: Start-ups summer maintenance winterizations and winter maintenance.

  • Ability to assist with preparing cost estimates as requested by supervisors.

  • Ability to test maintain and repair backflow devices.

  • Ability to train subordinate level employees and impart knowledge effectively.

  • Ability to provide feedback to the supervisor for reviews of lower-level employees.

  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with all levels of management city officials vendors other governmental agencies other employees and the public.

  • Ability to plan work activities to provide performance feedback and to plan schedules to meet objectives and goals of mission statement and to keep accurate and timely records of work performed.

  • Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with co-workers and the public.

  • Ability to act as a team member and collaborate with others.

  • Ability to perform record keeping functions data entry and data management.

  • Ability to be a dependable team player (can-do will-do attitude).

  • Valid Drivers License and the ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record.

  • Have and maintain acceptable background information including criminal conviction history.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in Landscape Management and Construction or related degree.

  • Experience with wireless communications for remote access to City of Boulder LAN.

  • Experienced in Irrigation Central Control and Smart Based Controllers

  • Experience working in public environments.

  • Degree or certification in Electrical Repair/Troubleshooting/Design or related.

  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively to diverse audiences.

  • Ability to exhibit leadership capabilities.

  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

  • Ability to exhibit communication and customer service skills.

  • Knowledge and understanding of resource conservation within a parks maintenance context.

  • Knowledge and familiarity with high-visitor urban environments.

  • Skills in utilizing tools equipment and software relevant to the role.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High School diploma or GED.

  • Three (3) years on the job experience in the field of irrigation management landscape management or closely related field.

  • Ability to obtain relevant certifications including First Aid CPR AED Heavy Equipment Certification CIT CLIA ASSE Backflow Certification within two (2) years.

  • Demonstrated experience with related machines equipment and tools including the ability to use a variety of long handles manual and power tools and equipment.

Supervision Received: Park Operations Irrigation and Assets Supervisor

Supervision Exercised: None.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical and mental effort: Engage in physically demanding tasks outdoors across a variety of weather conditions. Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks outdoors and under all weather conditions including the ability to stand kneel and bend frequently and for extended periods of time. Display the ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds and competently operate machinery. Requires standing walking bending climbing lifting dragging and pushing. Leverage effective communication skills both written and verbal.

  • Work environment: Willingness and ability to work irregular hours weekends evenings holidays or emergencies as required to respond to Parks and Forestry maintenance needs including on-call for snow removal or tree related to work under stressful situations and shifting priorities.

  • Machines and equipment used: Demonstrate proficiency in operating machinery and using office equipment. Will be required to perform snow removal duties as required.
