Job Description

PRINCIPAL ELEMENTARY

Portage Township Schools is currently seeking an experienced educational leader to serve as an Interim Elementary School Principal for theschool is a one-year full-time temporary assignment to support leadership continuity and instructional stability during a transitional period for the district. The interim role is necessary due to a planned realignment of our elementary schools which will reduce the number of buildings from eight to seven beginning in theschool year. Qualified applicants must have prior experience as a building administrators who meet certification requirements and are interested in returning to service for this interim role are strongly encouraged to apply.

JOB SUMMARY:

To use leadership supervisory and administrative skills to promote the educational development of each student the professional growth of staff members and foster positive community relations.

Serve as a role model who manifests integrity self-confidence a commitment to quality and excellence courage and a strong desire to focus decision-making relating to What Is Best for Kids philosophy.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Teachers Building Staff and Students

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS:

Masters degree or higher in Educational Leadership.

Certified as a principal.
At least five years of successful experience as a classroom teacher.
Experience in working with a diverse group of students.
Trained in behavior and discipline techniques
Proven achievement record in the classroom setting
Technology experience including the integration of technology into the teaching process

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (included but not limited to)

A. Performs as a member of the District Administration Team.
Participates in administrative staff meetings and performs assigned tasks.
Interprets and implements Board policies administrative rules and procedures.

    • Communicates and coordinates with appropriate personnel issues related to administration personnel instruction school-community relations operations equipment and supplies.
    • Prepares such reports as may be required by the district and state.

B. Performs as an Instructional Leader at the Building Level

  • Utilizes data to target areas for academic or behavioral improvement.
  • Sets standards of behavior based upon the approved Code of Conduct and Discipline Philosophy.
  • Interacts with students in a variety of situations.
  • Coordinates and supervises students services.
  • Oversees accurate student cumulative information and ensures its proper use.
  • Supervises accurate students accounting and attendance records.
  • Assists in securing class coverage when a substitute teacher is not available.
  • Assists in welcoming and directing substitute teachers new to the building.
  • Supervises student At-Risk Programming.

C. Supervises and evaluates personnel.

  • Helps determine personnel needs.
  • Assists in recruitment selection and the orientation of personnel.
  • Completes classroom visits and evaluations.
  • Assists in the design and implementation of professional development programs.
  • Directs and schedules the activities of school professional and nonprofessional members in the performance of their duties.
  • Conducts meetings of the staff as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.

D. Assists in the coordination and supervision of functions related to the business nature of the school.

  • Supervise inventories orders and dispersal of supplies and equipment.
  • Prepare the schools budget and monitor expenditure of funds.
  • Helps evaluate the condition of the building and grounds according to educational health safety and aesthetic standards.
  • Helps initiate changes in use renovations and updating the building and grounds.
  • Works with the custodial and maintenance staff to provide a safe clean learning environment.
  • Responsibility for the day to day operation safety and administration of the building and grounds.
  • Helps develop building plans administers and supervises emergency preparedness and drills.
  • Coordinates District Assessments.

E. Maintains awareness of current trends and research in education through self-improvement activities such as college courses reading in-service and professional organization participation.

F.Provides instructional leadership on curriculum development and instruction-and uses data to inform instructional accountability for student achievement and success in the related programs.

G. Supervises the education data management system.

H. Facilitates staff professional development and in-service activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidate Requirements listed above plus the knowledge skills and ability listed below.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITY:

  1. Maintains awareness of current trends andresearch in education through self -improvement such as college courses reading in-service and professional organization participation
  2. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from community regulatory agencies or members of the school community.
  3. Effectively present information to the Superintendent Board of Education public groups teachers and/or five years of successful experience as a classroom teacher.
  4. Ability to use technology effectively
  5. Ability to Listen
  6. Ability to work with students and build relationships

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Associate Superintendent

  • Ability to work with students and build relationships.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with all stakeholders.
  • Ability to effectively present information to the Principal Superintendent Board of Education public groups teachers and/or administrators.
  • Ability to use technology effectively.
