Position Summary

KIPP is looking for a dynamic and energetic coach to help lead sports teams at KIPP Excelencia Community Prep. We are looking for someone who is passionate about youth development and building a winning team culture. Coaches at Excelencia will lead a cohort of students through athletic social and academic development in a program that balances practice games and homework help each day. Some sports offered at Excelencia are soccer basketball volleyball flag football and more.

There is an opportunity for year round Athletics Coaching or Seasonal Coaching depending on the schools needs.

Reports to: Michael Shoesmith Director of Expanded Learning

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:
  • Has prior experience coaching school athletic teams

Training:
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
  • Completion of the following courses on :
    • Fundamentals of Coaching
    • Concussion
    • Sudden Cardiac Arrest
    • Heat Illness Prevention
    • First Aid (unless already certified or planning to obtain certification through another process)

Knowledge/skills required:
  • Possesses and maintains a moral character thats in alignment with the expectations of KIPP Public Schools Northern CA
  • Possesses all qualifications and criteria established by KIPP Public Schools Northern CA for coaches supervisors and directors of student activity programs
  • Possesses knowledge of the sport(s) assigned including but not limited to knowledge of rules/regulations strategy training and conditioning practice techniques and the ability to diagnose player deficiencies and prescribe corrective activities.
  • Possesses ability to communicate effectively with families students staff and other stakeholders
  • Possesses the ability to address situations dealing with accidents injuries blood bodily fluids tissue etc.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Manage and supervise the Athletics Teams from grades 3 through 8
  • Coordinate and facilitate practices leading up to and during the season
  • Attend and coach at all games during the season
  • Communicate with families about practices and games and send reminders leading up to practices and games
  • Supervise students at all times including staying with students at practices and games until all students are picked up
  • Coordinate the issuance care and inventory of equipment supplies (medical as well as others) and uniforms
  • Assist the Athletic Director in purchasing equipment supplies and uniforms for the particular sport as necessary
  • Supervise students at all times from the time practice or the activity starts until the designated activity ends
  • Ensure the proper completion of physical examinations and all forms relating to the to the examinations and emergency medical authorization before a student participates in any tryout practice scrimmage or game
  • Submit the following forms to the Athletic Director prior to the start of the season
    • Team Roster
    • All other forms required by the Athletic Director
  • Update Google Spreadsheets with equipment information of your specific team
  • Coordinate the distribution collection and storage of athletic equipment uniforms and supplies (during the season and at its conclusion) and the collection of fees for lost equipment and uniforms by athletes
  • Complete all required NFHS and First Aid/CPR certifications required by the PSAL and CIF
  • Attend seasonal informational meeting regarding your sport
  • Enforce all academic requirements set forth by the leagues of participation and by KIPP
  • Show respect for officials the press opposing coaches visiting teams parents fans students athletes fellow coaches and teachers
  • Be a leader among young student-athletes as an athletic coach and/or teacher
  • Be responsible for the security of all facilities used by the team and coaching staff when custodians are not on duty
  • Report the score to the Athletic Director immediately following any contest via text or email
  • Perform any other duties or responsibilities related to the coaching position as needed or directed by the Principal and/or Athletic Director



Establish an environment in which athletes can gain self-esteem and develop a positive self-image:
  • Demonstrate an interest in the classroom efforts of athletes
  • Provide leadership that promotes positive attitudes and good sportsmanship
  • Work with athletes in a fair understanding tolerant sympathetic and patient manner
  • Promote school and community interest in the sport by:
    • Holding a pre-season athlete and family meeting
    • Maintaining a pleasant workable relationship with league officials tournament officials and news media
    • Encouraging team members to attend other games dances school plays etc.
  • Notify all members of the team of all policies procedures and training rules as they pertain to the team
  • Be responsible for the conduct of student-athletes and other involved students at all times (practices games other schools etc.)

Establish winning teams within the bounds of good sportsmanship:
  • Develop teamwork morale sportsmanship courtesy fair play academic excellence and strict adherence to the rules of training and conduct
  • Promote the attitude among athletes and coaches that winning is important but is secondary to good sportsmanship and the overall welfare of the athlete

Manage and supervise Study Hall & Academic Support
  • Lead Study Hall & Academic Support 1 day/week for all student athletes
  • Supervise to ensure students are completing Homework Enrichment work or additional Academic work
  • Provide support and answer students questions as needed
  • Collaborate with and communicate academic progress with students teachers and families



Physical Mental and Environmental Demands

Physical: Ability to navigate office school campuses school facilities and hold meetings in different spaces. Traditionally much of the day involves sitting. Ability to access and utilize technology. Occasional lifting/carrying of equipment 1-30 lbs. Physical agility to move self in various positions in order to execute duties effectively which may include kneeling walking pushing/pulling squatting twisting turning bending stooping and reaching overhead

Mental: Stress of deadlines and normal work standards ability to analyze problems and generate alternatives work with interruptions concentrate for long periods of time read calculate perform routine math problems memorize and recall objects and people.

Environmental: School and in-person classroom environment subject to constant interruptions and distractions. Adhere to KIPPs health and safety guidelines as outlined by the CDC CDE and public health agencies recommendations.



Classification
This is a part-time job (20 hours / week) with typical hours of 2:00pm - 6:00pm Monday - Friday. Some athletic games practices or events may take place outside of standard working hours. Standard working hours may be adjusted and this role is also eligible for overtime hours. This position is based out of our Redwood City schools with travel to various local destinations for games or events.

Compensation
We benchmark annually against comparably-sized non-profit organizations in the regions where we operate to offer competitive salaries. Hourly pay for this role is between: $20.91 - $24.48 / hour. This role also includes Medical Benefits that are 100% covered for Employees by KIPP Northern California.
