FLSA Status: Exempt One-Year PositionSite/Location:School-Based (Middle School)Reports to:Department of Teaching and LearningDate:5/19/2025POSITION SUMMARY

The All-In Literacy Curriculum Specialist in collaboration with the Department of Teaching and Learning supports the implementation of evidence-based literacy instruction across all K12 classrooms with an emphasis on 6-8 Literacy.. A key focus is aligning curriculum pacing with the evolving Literacy Plan and Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) while promoting literacy integration across core-content areas. The Literacy Specialist will work closely with teachers administrators and instructional teams to develop lesson plans write literacy curriculum and ensure literacy instruction is aligned with best practices and the Virginia Literacy Act. They will collaborate with educators to implement literacy initiatives participate in classroom observations to support the delivery of the written literacy curriculum and assist with the integration of High-Quality Instructional Materials.

The Literacy Specialist will also:

  • Design cross-curricular lessons and update curriculum pacing to reflect the science of reading and VDOE guidance.
  • Participates collaboratively in literacy-focused classroom observations to provide actionable feedback to strengthen instruction.
  • Provide school-based support for the implementation of HQIM and the creation of student reading plans in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure effective and meaningful student growth opportunities.
  • Collaborating with PLCs and content leads to embed literacy into all disciplines with emphasis on Grades 68.
  • Support effective core instruction as well as supplemental and intervention programs.
  • Help school teams interpret and act on literacy data including common assessments and VALLSS results.
  • Assist with planning and monitoring of Student Reading Plans and intervention.
  • Facilitate professional learning aligned to VLA requirements.

  • Use data collected to strategically support the needs of teachers and students.
  • Write literacy curriculum and align quarterly pacing.
  • Monitor implementation and progress of literacy initiatives including Science of Reading.
  • Conduct classroom walk-throughs to collect data regarding the implementation of division literacy instruction.
  • Works to achieve division literacy objectives.
  • Assists teachers in pacing instruction to provide opportunities for student success.
  • Plans and makes effective use of time materials and resources.
  • Designs intentional cross-curricular opportunities and structures to ensure literacy is a priority across all subjects K-12.
  • Demonstrates respect consideration and courtesy.
  • Accepts and/or offers purposeful suggestions and feedback in a professional manner to enhance instructional outcomes.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Candidate must possess a Virginia Teaching License and at least five years of classroom experience.
  • Masters preferred with an endorsement in English Reading and/or Curriculum & Instruction.
