Minimum Qualifications:
Masters degree from an accredited university or college in the field of counseling social work psychology or related field
Experience offering mental health services as a social worker marriage & family counselor or school psychologist preferred
Skill in evaluating planning and implementing services for students needing assistance
Ability to work with individuals groups and communities to improvemental health
Abilityadvise educate and support people with mental health issues
Supporter and advocate of the inclusion model for students
Knowledge of instruction and innovative teaching methods
Knowledge of common behavioral/mental health diagnoses (DSM-5) and evidence-based therapeutic treatments for school-aged children
Experience dealing with issues including depression addiction stress grief low self-esteem and anxiety
Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
Skill in providing/assisting with inservice training of school personnel related to special education
Skill in interpersonal relations with pupils parents teachers staff and the general public
Outstanding references from current and former supervisors
Satisfactory SLED (SC Law Enforcement Division) report

Length of Contract: 190 days

JOB DESCRIPTION
Mental Health Counselor
Purpose Statement:
The job of a Mental Health Counselor is done for the purpose/s of delivering mental health care to assigned clients at their designated school location(s). They provide training and consultation services to school staff and parents to support the overall mental health goals.
This job reports the Director of Mental Health.
To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. SKILLS are required to perform multiple highly complex technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying effective and innovative instructional and student evaluation techniques and developing interpersonal relationships with pupils parents teachers staff and the general public; outstanding verbal and written skills.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform algebra and/or geometry; review and interpret highly technical information write technical materials and/or speak persuasively to implement desired actions; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: knowledge and experience teaching special education students in a self-contained setting with an enthusiasm for instructing disabled students desired; exceptional knowledge of the needs of special students required.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities meetings and/or events; routinely gather collate and/or classify data; and use basic job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing a variety of complex processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. In working with others independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires analysis based on organizational objectives; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working with frequent interruptions and working with other teachers to promote interdisciplinary studies.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision using standardized practices and/or methods; leading guiding and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the jobs functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the Organizations services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting carrying pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping kneeling crouching and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting 20% walking and 40% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and a generally hazard free environment.
