The LSU College of Humanities & Social Sciences invites qualified applicants to apply for a Counselor 1 position on our team. The academic counseling team in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences is responsible for providing academic counseling to all majors being admitted to the College of Humanities & Social Sciences including prospective new and re-entry students transfer students and to approximately 4200 students who are currently enrolled in the College of Humanities & Social Sciences following a Humanities & Social Sciences curricula and are in need of academic assistance.
Job Responsibilities:
General Counseling and Administrative Responsibilities (50%):
General counseling including providing academic counseling to majors admitted to the College. Also counseling prospective new students re-entry students and current students. General administrative responsibilities including: determining correct academic status of students at the end of the academic sessions preparing correct student rosters of candidates for the appropriate degree and ensuring that candidates meet all requirements serving as liaison with the Office of Admissions and the Office of the University Registrar and interacting with chairs/ directors and faculty in coordinating student academic information.
Special Projects and Activities in the HSS Student Services Section (25%):
Preparing evaluations of courses for transfer credit and substitutions of courses in curricula comments etc. Responding to various letters of inquiry regarding student matters. Assisting in the assessment of student needs and other student-related research projects. Assisting in planning career-related programs for majors with the Career Services liaison. Remaining abreast of professional developments through such avenues as professional literature professional seminars and professional organizations.
Specialized Counseling Duties (20%):
Specialized counseling activities which include general counseling activities and/or special projects activities as work assignments to various academic units and/or to specific populations within the College of Humanities & Social Sciences. Specialized retention activities directed at the HSS population.
Other duties as assigned (5%)
As with all LSU employees academic counselors have an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional behavioral or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
Minimum Qualifications
Education Level:Bachelors
Degree Substitution: LSU values skills experience and expertise. Candidates who have relevant experience in key job responsibilities are encouraged to apply a degree is not required as long as the candidate meets the required years of experience specified in the job description.
Preferred Qualifications
Education Level:Masters
Specific Degree:Counseling Social Work or related behavioral science discipline
Years of Experience: 2 years
Specific Experience: Working with the college-age population in a counseling capacity.
