Primary Purpose of Position:

Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic team member to be part of the North Carolina Zoo team.The Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking two (2) enthusiastic Commissioned Law Enforcement Officer to fill our Park Ranger positions. AZoo Park Rangerserves as field officer with full law enforcement authority to provide law enforcement security and will enforce state laws and park regulations through patrol education warnings citations and arrests.

Key Responsibilities:

• Responsible for demonstrating excellent customer service by providing visitor safety and protection located within North Carolina Zoo boundaries.
• Enforcing state laws while engaging in parking lot and campus patrol via vehicle and/or foot patrols.
• Recognizing emergency situations and taking appropriate action to resolve them.
• Assisting Park guests as necessary to resolve complaints or problems
• Responding to safety or law enforcement issues inside park and other campus locations as necessary.
• Providing first aid care for guests as needed.
• Coordinating with local state or federal agencies as necessary.
• Taking appropriate law enforcement action and testifying in court as needed
• Providing security assistance for large events inside the Zoo.
• Works with the North Carolina Zoo director of security and risk management providing public safety services.

Position/Physical Requirements:

• Prior to Employment: Selected candidates are required to have successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education Training and Standards Commission.
• Must possess and maintain a Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission.
• Typical work schedule is Saturday to Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; includes evening shifts and weekends on a rotating schedule
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule which may include day evening night weekend and holiday as necessary.
• Must have or be able to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license within90 daysof employment.
• Considered Emergency Staff and may be required to work on adverse weather days during emergencies and special events.
• Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Must have the ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Must have the ability to endure long periods of outdoor field conditions at any time of the year with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Must have the ability to negotiate uneven outdoor terrain on footwith or without reasonable accommodation.
• Housing is NOT available.

Within 12 months of hire date must have the ability to obtain and maintain:

• Successfully complete CPR Certification

Veterans and National Guard Preference

Applicants seeking Veterans Preference must attach a DD Form 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty along with the state application.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach an NGB 23A (RPAS) along with the state application if they are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.

Applicants who are former member of either the NC Army National Guard or the NC Air National Guard with honorable discharge and six years of creditable service must attach a copy of the DD 256 or NGB 22 along with the state application.
