Standard Work Hours: Shift Work 40 hours per week

Additional Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts on a rotating basis.

Salary: $35.00 per hour

YOUR FOCUS

Reporting to the Central Heating Plant (CHP) Superintendent the Shift Operator 2 is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the high-pressure steam heating plant at UNB. UNB operates a high-pressure steam Heating Plant consisting of (5) Boilers which burn Biomass Bunker C and Natural Gas.

  • Operate a high-pressure steam heating plant on an assigned shift in accordance with duties as defined by NB-Regulation 84-17 5 under the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act Article 22.
  • Report all violations in the scope of the Central Heating Plants Approval to Operate. Complete necessary documents and provides notification to the appropriate authorities.
  • Adapt to new operating techniques new technology and modern automated equipment as new initiatives are implemented within the steam and condensate systems.
  • Coordinate with all outside agencies as required.
  • Ensure all visitors contractors and students within the CHP follow UNBs safety regulations.
  • Perform daily chemical testing of boiler water feed water and condensate to maintain recommended conditions of steam and condensate systems. Report upsets to CHP Superintendent.
  • Receive goods and retain documents and technical information for the CHP Superintendent as necessary.
  • Periodically log readings on an hourly basis of temperature pressure and flow. Perform various calculations and record collected data troubleshoot and make necessary operational changes.
  • Responsible for isolation of equipment to allow personnel to perform maintenance.
  • Periodically inspect all Central Heating Plant equipment and building infrastructure.
  • Rake ash for solid fuel boilers as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance as required.
  • Provide daily direction to the Shift Operator 1 in the operation of the Central Heating Plant.
  • Perform Shift Operation Maintenance duties during periodic plant shutdowns or as required.
  • Make recommendations for improving equipment efficiency operating techniques and plant operational changes to the Central Heating Plant Superintendent or designate.
  • Act as the Central Heating Plant Superintendent as required and as code limitations permit.
  • Tasks may require exposure to various conditions including an industrial environment inclement weather working at heights confined spaces hot ambient conditions and may also be performed under emergency conditions.
  • Prepare operating procedures/manual as assigned. Perform related duties as required.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Possession of a valid third (3rd) class Power Engineer License as defined by NB-Regulation 84-175 under the Boiler and Pressure Vessels Act Article 12.
  • Must have at least one year of experience in the operation of a high-pressure steam heating plant.

Additional Strengths:

  • Knowledge and ability to use the equipment and procedures employed in the operation and maintenance of a second-class high-pressure steam heating plant.
  • Must have knowledge of lock-out and tag-out permits and equipment as required by Work Safe NB.
  • Must be capable of coping with emergencies involving boilers and associated equipment.
  • Knowledge of an issuance of Plant hot work permits.
  • Computer skills considered an asset.
