Reporting to the Food Services Supervisor the Baker/Cook will act as part of a team and fill in for the Chef in their absence to prepare delicious and nutritious meals for our guests. Responsibilities will include helping to coordinate evening meal services and assisting volunteers to prep serve and clean up after meals. This role will also ensure all food deliveries from suppliers and donations are received checked sorted and stored in the most safe and efficient manner. The Baker/Cook will prepare cookies muffins other baked products and snack from scratch for the School Lunch Program as needed and create desserts for our shelter guests.

Schedule: Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare meals for shelter guests and community members in Chefs absence
- Serve meals to guests assist in coordinating volunteers and clean up after meal service
- Utilize ingredients and supplies efficiently to minimize waste
- Bake cookies muffins and snacks for School Lunch Program
- Bake desserts for shelter guests and community members as needed
- Assist Supervisor with inventory and place orders when required
- Receive and verify orders and store all purchased food and kitchen items
- Ensure proper food rotation and organize storage of food supplies and donations
- Maintain cleanliness of the kitchen: wash dishes clean cookware and cutlery; clean floors coolers walls sinks etc.
- Work alongside volunteers
- Greet and welcome all donors in a professional and respectful manner
- Respect and follow necessary boundaries with coworkers volunteers and guests
- Maintain Occupational Health & Safety Standards
- Follow the Environmental Health Services Guidelines regarding how food is prepared handled and stored
- Required to abide by all Health & Safety protocols including completing a report for all incidents that occur including near misses in a timely manner
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
- A minimum of two (2) years cooking and baking experience working in the Food Service industry
- Valid certificate from the Alberta Health Services Food Safe course preferred or obtain within 1 month of hire
- Ability to independently prepare high quality food in a commercial kitchen for a large number of clients
- Ability to creatively incorporate ingredients to utilize donations and reduce waste
- Willingness to participate in training required by The Mustard Seed
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to resolve conflicts and solve problems as they arise
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This is position requires shifts coverage and availability to work various shift times including evenings and weekends
- This is a hands on position requiring moderate to significant physical effort such as: extended periods of standing walking sitting climbing lifting reaching carrying (must be able to lift up to 25 to 50 pounds)
- Position is often fast-paced and demanding requiring substantial mental effort to analyze information and problem solve
- Daily interactions with colleagues and guests required
- Employees are to be aware that many of our clients may experience difficulties or impairment at times which could result in them uttering threats discriminatory statements and other insults at your person. This may be in a raised voice or in seeing unpredictable behaviour up to and including the possibility of them becoming aggressive
- Training on how to respond is provided but this is to be considered typical working conditions. Many of our clients are unaware of the impact of these comments.
