The Redwood City Pulse is an award-winning independent provider of news and information serving the Redwood City community. It is part of Embarcadero Media Foundation a Palo Alto-based nonprofit that also publishes six other websites that produce breaking news community news and lifestyle coverage.


The Pulse seeks a versatile digital-first news reporter based in the Bay Area with solid reporting newsgathering and writing skills and good instincts about what makes a story compelling. Reporting for Embarcaderos newest site the Redwood City Pulse the ideal candidate has the ability to work under tight deadlines and the desire to engage readers through multiple forms of storytelling including email newsletters social media podcasts videos and other forms of multimedia.


The journalists work should reflect the vitality of the Redwood City community by covering the people organizations culture and government that impact residents. The reporter should develop a broad range of sources and pitch story ideas that resonate with our community members. Were looking for a reporter who thrives on enterprise and accountability reporting who can turn around a breaking news brief and then dig into deeper meaningful stories that reflect the needs and concerns of our diverse communities.

This journalist will work with Embarcadero Medias award-winning Peninsula editorial team that currently publishes the Palo Alto Weekly and The Almanac newspapers and three other community websites (Palo Alto Online Mountain View Online and The Almanac Online) and two specialty lifestyle digital newsletters (The Six Fifty and Peninsula Foodist). You will work with our editor our audience engagement team and our marketing team.


The Redwood City Pulse is a reader-supported all-digital model that combines traditional news coverage with in-depth enterprise reporting and focuses on actively listening to and engaging readers online and through events and forums.

What Youll Do:

  • Report and write daily news and longer-form enterprise stories for a digital-first newsroom
  • Monitor city council and school board meetings watchdog local agencies and track regional trends
  • File stories on deadline for our Express daily newsletter
  • Develop and maintain source relationships across the mid-Peninsula / San Mateo County
  • Occasionally contribute to podcasts live events and video or multimedia storytelling
  • Collaborate with staff visual journalists on special reporting projects
  • Engage readers through social media and respond to community feedback
  • Occasionally assist with foundation events and community forums

What Were Looking For:

  • Previous professional reporting experience
  • Strong writing reporting and interviewing skills
  • Comfort filing PRA requests and pursuing public records
  • A working knowledge of AP Style
  • Strong organizational skills and a proactive attitude
  • Spanish fluency and/or familiarity with San Mateo and Santa Clara counties is a plus
